Set in the small village of Ysbyty Ifan, just outside Betws Y Coed, this cottage is an old Almshouse dating back to the 1880’s. The cottage is everything a cute stone cottage in rural North Wales should be; kooky walls, cosy and most of all, welcoming.
As you enter the cottage into the sitting room, a wood burner in a slate surround is the natural focus of the room. But when you step back, taking in the rest of the room, the stained glass window above the door and the random cupboards set in the walls tell you this is a place with history. Big comfy sofas, a large TV and some lovely touches like the unusual lamp make this a great space to while away your afternoons after a day out in the mountains.
The sitting room leads into the kitchen. A galley style kitchen with everything you will need and all the appliances you would expect including a dishwasher and washing machine. The units are oak and the traditional round dining room table makes great use of the space.
The bedrooms and bathroom are all accessed from the kitchen. At one end is the bathroom which is home to a shower, WC and washbasin and at the other end, there is a double room and a room with bunkbeds. The double is a really beautiful airy room with minimal furniture, the character coming from the lovely soft furnishings. Next door, the bunk room is a double bunk with a single over top – again, the most has been made with this space with the choice of furnishings makes them really inviting bedrooms.

The village of Ysbyty Ifan was once home to Abraham Lincoln’s Great Great Grandfather, but, despite this claim to fame, remains a peaceful quiet village in the heart of rural North Wales. The river Conwy flows through the village with a pretty bridge in the centre. There is a post office, but true to rural form, there are no opening times and so would not depend on it. Being set in one of the most picturesque parts of Snowdonia, there are some great walks from the cottage itself, its location means you can access the hills in front and behind easily and take in the beautiful surrounding scenery.
15 mins from Betws Y Coed, the heart of Snowdonia you have the Swallow Falls, The Fairy Glen and The Marin mountain biking trail along with some great shops, especially if you are looking for outdoor clothes and accessories. The high street also has a really great selection of cafes and restaurants so you won’t be stuck for choice.
15 mins in the other direction will bring you to Blaenau Ffestiniog which is home to Zip World Titan, Llechwedd Slate Caverns and Antur Stiniog Mountain biking downhill trails.
Snowdonia has so much to offer and within an hours drive, you can whitewater raft in Bala, Surf at Surf Snowdonia (inland surfing lagoon), see Portmeirion the beautiful Italian Village based on the coast which is home to Festival No 6, climb Snowdon and visit one of many Castles which are classed as world heritage sites…. and this is the tip of the iceberg as to what is on offer.
