Unique self catering cottage in North Wales | Gatehouse

Gatehouse | Unique self catering cottage in North WalesThe Gatehouse of Cors Y Gedol Hall is a truly unique self catering cottage in North Wales. Built by the Vaughan family in the 14th century this imposing building now provides self catering accommodation for up to 7 people in one of the nicest parts of the Snowdonia national park. Having driven up the mile long drive from the coast road you cant help but be impressed by the gothic symmetry of the building. It stands of course as the welcome entrance to the great hall behind. Carved granite finials flank the central arch where lords and ladies in horse drawn carriages would pass through. And the arched windows with their sandstone mullions and a central cusp create a real fairytale look.

The central arch which bisects the house does mean the accommodation is unconventional. But I think that just adds to the character. The lounge and two of the bedrooms are on one side of the building whilst the kitchen and one more bedroom are on the other side. Having to pass through the covered central arch to get to the other side does mean that midnight trips to the fridge in your nightie might be a bit risky as the arch remains exposed on one side. But I’m guessing the sheep have probably seen it all before.

Unique Self catering Cottage

The kitchen has a country cottage feel and includes a dishwasher and washing machine as well as all the other essentials. The lounge is beautifully furnished. Original features such as old oak beams and arched windows are complimented by Laura Ashley curtains and tasteful antique ornaments. As I say, three bedrooms in total. One family room with a double bed and a single bed plus two more double rooms. All the bedrooms have a fantastic view over the surrounding grounds. Both sides of the building have a wc each. Which is a relief. One bathroom has a shower, the other a bath.

As part of the Cors Y Gedol estate this unique self catering cottage is set within impressive grounds. Guests have their own enclosed and private garden to enjoy but are also free to explore the manicured lawns and lake of the main hall nearby. The surrounding ancient woodland is also a great place for curious children (and adults) to explore. Beyond the trees the mountains of the national park rise up to the west and are easily accessible straight from your front door. To the east miles of sandy beaches stretch out along the Cambrian coast. There are a couple of pubs in the village, a small grocery store, a post office and an excellent local butchers. The popular seaside town of Barmouth is a 10 minute drive to the south whilst the town of Harlech with its famous castle and links golf course is 10 minutes to the North. This entire stretch of coastline boasts some wonderful clean and sandy beaches. Whilst walking in the mountains provides the perfect escape from the daily bustle. Too many adventure activities to list but drop me an email if you need pointing in the right direction.

We spent a lovely (if wet!) weekend at The Gatehouse.
We felt welcome as soon as we saw the cake and the bottle of milk in the kitchen, the heaters were all on and the place was cosy, despite the gale force winds and lashing rain outside.
The lady at the farm house and her daughter were charming and helpful.
The beach at the bottom of the road is fabulous as is Harlech castle.
We would recommend this place wholeheartedly and plan to return one day when the sun is shining.

A delightful week for 7 of us. Weather might have been warmer and less windy, but it did not rain when it mattered. The Gatehouse is a wonderful building as is indeed the whole complex. The setting is most pleasant with few people about and there is lots of interest within a few miles.

We enjoyed the company of Olive (the spinger spaniel) saw bats at dusk and one morning I found a young newt on the tiles of the gateway.

I did not look at the internet before going so had the unknown to look forward to, but realise it would have told me so much more about what to look out for.

We would all like to come again, me, my wife, son, daughter-in-law and grand children.

    Thank you very much

We have just returned from a fabulous stay at the Gate House.
Absolutely spotless, warm and cosy. Fantastic value for money, would recommend a stay to all our family and friends. Well done.

Just returned from a weekend break at The Gatehouse.
We chose The Gatehouse because on the brochure the place looked cosy, quirky, and full of character, and in an ideal location. Very atmospheric!
We were made aware that people would be around if you need them, but you are also left in privacy to enjoy your holiday.
We took our two dogs to stay, and they loved the location, grounds, and gardens…..also the sounds of the local wildlife.
We found the kitchen fully equipped with everything you need for a stay, and a few extras including a lovely Apple-pie…thanks!
Was great to have the linen and extra blankets provided should you need.
Would love to return again in the summer maybe, i would recommend a stay there, an ideal retreat.
Infact if i won the lottery would love to buy the place!
    Hope to return soon!

We’ve just come back from a fabulous week in the Gatehouse. It was perfect for our 2 families and the split accommodation didn’t bother us at all, in fact we all found it worked really well.
We have stayed at a number of Dioni properties, which have all been excellent, but I think this was our favourite to date as the location was just amazing – loads of space for the kids to run around without having to worry about cars, and beautiful walks from your doorstep.
Everything all very comfortable and clean inside and having wifi was very helpful.
    Thanks very much!

My friends from Swansea and I stayed at the Gatehouse for a weekend in late May and absolutely loved it. The kitchen and sitting room were both large with plenty of room for 3 adults and 2 children. It was clean and suited all of our needs. We didn’t mind the split accommodation at all, and in fact the archway provided a nice place to sit outside but still under cover. While we would have been pleased to have met the owners, we had no need to contact them as the facility was easy to navigate and provided everything we needed. Being from the USA, the novelty of staying in a place built in 1630 was fun for me, and the kids thought we were staying in our own “mini castle”. There were opportunities for several different walks right from the doorstep, and the location between Barmouth and Harlech and proximity to Snowdonia National Park were great. The owners provided brochures of local attractions, books about Snowdonia, and some of the history of the estate for visitors to browse through, which was a nice touch. We would love to come back for a longer period of time in the future. I would highly recommend this accommodation. Thanks!

  7. Vineta Cable, Devon says:

Our stay the the Gatehouse was very pleasant and comfortable. The property is in a beautiful location and near stunning beaches and historical points of interest. The only slight draw back was very poorly working shower. Other than this, I would whole heartedly recommend this property to others.

  8. Davina Williams, Bristol says:

We had a lovely time at the Gatehouse. The split accommodation suited us very well allowing my daughter’s family to get up when my grandson woke without disturbing the rest of us. The location was fantastic with gorgeous walks from the door. The nearest beach is wonderfully clean and spacious. The kitchen was well equipped and it was good to have linen and towels provided. Best of all was the peace and the proximity of wildlife; watching the swallows swooping into their nests in the arch will be a special memory.

  9. Gary Taylor, Maidstone says:

We had a memorable week at the Gatehouse and wouldn’t hesitate to go back. It’s a truly unique cottage that oozes character in a lovely peaceful spot and with swallows nesting in the arch, a peahen supplying morning alarm calls and sheep grazing in the front garden (if you forget to shut the gate) we were thoroughly entertained by the local animal life too. The location is excellent being within easy reach of so many places to visit and as others have said, there are some great walks right on the doorstep. Thankyou for helping us have a great time in beautiful North Wales.

  10. Anna Stevenson, Manchester says:

Got back yesterday from a fab week in the Gatehouse. We really enjoyed ourselves as did our dogs but do think about the split nature of the Gatehouse. We didn’t find it worked for us (or our dogs) but we’re planning to go to it’s “sister” cottage, Laundry Cottage, next year as the location is so great.

There’s a small wood for an early morning “necessary” walk and the nearby beach is one of the best in the area for dogs (and humans).

It’s very quiet and the birds are fun to watch. There are doors at the back of the arch which close it off from the main house so you’re not overlooked.

Two other things dog-wise: the garden is enclosed but our dogs were able to get under the fence (mini schnauzers weighing about 11kg) also the stairs go straight off the sitting room and kitchen so unless you use a cage or your dog is not used to going upstairs you may have a problem. We got round it with empty suitcases but it’s something to keep in mind.

Don’t forget to say hi from us to the two sheep (we nicknamed them Hinge and Bracket).

Finally if this is your first time booking with Dioni, the are really friendly, helpful and efficient. We’ve used them twice now and will happily use again as we were very satisfied.

We had a wonderful time at the Gate House for a short October break. We arrived late, but woke up to a wonderful locale. The house is quite easy to stay in, despite being split in two (which worked great as we were able to put the teens on one side and kept the other side for ourselves). We really appreciated the lovely flowers and apple pie that was left for us. We loved the respect for the old world charm that the house has, with the addition of updates to keep things fresh. The only things we would have liked to see improved is the Wi-Fi signal strength (especially since it isn’t free), perhaps a small table in the living room area, and making the bathtub also adapted to be a shower would be wonderful. But even without those changes, we would gladly come back. As for recommendations – we enjoyed Tony’s for Italian and went to the Mermaid for Fish and Chips – enjoyed both — but with Tony’s proximity and comfortable atmosphere, we would recommend it more. Thanks for a wonderful time! PS — our experience with Dioni was wonderful. Thank you!

If you want to stay in something a little different from the norm then I can highly recommend The Gate House. Steeped in history and lovingly restored and sympathetically updated it really has a unique character all of its own. The house being split into two by the arch was ideal for us as a family plus grandparents, they had one wing and we had the other. The surrounding woodland is magical at this time of year (end of April) with a carpet of bluebells none of us had seen anywhere before in such numbers and enhanced by bird song from dawn till dusk. There are some lovely walks close by and the village of Dyffryn Ardudwy is not far away for any provisions you may need during your stay. We had a fantastic 4 days and would highly recommend The Gate House and the area for a get away from it all stay. We have booked through Dioni on several occasions and never been disappointed, it does what it says on the tin! Thank you for another memorable stay.

  13. Sue and Darren Trinder says:

Just home after a fabulous bank holiday weekend at the majestic Gatehouse cottage. We went with our 2 young children and my husband’s parents. The Gatehouse is special to my husband’s family as they have been holidaying here since the 1950’s but have not visited for nearly 20 years! What can I say other than I am totally in love with the place! The peace and quiet was fantastic. Letting my 2 and 5 year old play free without worrying about cars was brilliant. The bluebell woods right on the doorstep was wonderful and they both enjoyed exploring them and jumping the stream!

The cottage has everything you could possibly need for a comfortable stay. It is immaculately clean. The towels provided were lovely and soft and the beds nice and comfy. Bring a hair-dryer though as there isn’t one there at present. We also brought our baby gate for the stairs as the family room leads straight onto a few stairs. This is, in my opinion, is an essential piece of equipment if staying here with toddlers who may get up in the night! The split layout worked well for us and our family stayed on one side and the in laws got privacy by being on the other side. The kids loved running through the arch from one side to another!

The BBQ was a great hit and we used this both nights. The Spar just down the road sells all the essentials to get you by for the weekend!

I would not hesitate in recommending a visit to The Gatehouse to anybody looking for old world charm with modern amenities available to allow you the time to just sit back, relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery! In fact were already booking for next year!!

  14. Andy and Sarah Barker, Lancs says:

We have just returned from a week in the Gatehouse and we absolutely loved it! The split accomodation worked well for us and it was lovely to let the dog and our little girl play out without worrying about traffic etc. The location was ideal for us, with the beach nearby and plenty to do in nearby Barmouth (especially the brilliant childrens play area – Bendi-gedig!) and Harlech.

We will most definately be re-booking the Gatehouse for future trips!
