Hendy | Pet Friendly Farm Self Catering Cottage | Llanbedr Shell Island

Hendy, self catering cottage near Llanbedr

Hendy is on a working welsh hill farm. The farm owners Eirian and Iwan are really nice and live just a short walk away from the cottage. They’re more than happy, if time permits, to show their guests around the farm and to advise on the best places in the area to visit.

But the cottage will be your base of course. The front door opens onto a central oak paneled staircase. With ledge and brace doors to the left and right giving access to the lounge and dining room respectively. The lounge has an impressive inglenook with a cast iron stove as well as plenty of comfortable seating. The dining room next door is a lighter space and again generously proportioned. So plenty of room for those family meals.

The dairy towards the back of the property has been converted into a well equipped kitchen. The original slate floor is more visible here. The original slate worktop in the larder keeping food cool as it did the milk in years gone by.

Three bedrooms upstairs. Two double rooms and one smaller single room. More oak paneling, ledge and brace doors with wrought iron latches and exposed beams. All three bedrooms have stunning views over Cardigan Bay. The bathroom has the luxury of a huge cast iron enameled bath as well as a standard shower.

Sitting in a slightly elevated position the cottage looks out over the sands of shell island and the Artro estuary and onto Cardigan Bay and the mountains of the Llyn Peninsula beyond. The little village of Llanbedr is about a mile down the road. There are two pubs in the village as well as a small grocery store, post office and butchers.

You’re right on the doorstep of Cwm Nantcol and the Rhinnog Mountains so plenty of opportunities for walkers. And the beaches along this stretch of the north wales coastline are among the nicest in the UK. And no, it doesn’t always rain in wales. Other attractions include golf on the Royal St Davids links course in Harlech, mountain biking at the award winning Coed Y Brennin Centre and White water rafting on the Tryweryn river.

We were in for a pleasant surprise when we reached Hendi farm – late at 10.30 on the first night of our stay. From the outset, its a beautiful old house that you always wanted to stay at … We expected the cottage to be v old from the inside as well.. It turned out to be fully sophisticated, well maintained from the inside. The cottage was v nice – 1 single bedroom, 2 double bedroom suites – All are sea facing , with the sea hardly 2 to 3 miles away. The living room has a fireplace to keep us warm , if need be..

More importantly, we were helped through the booking process very easily and they didn’t mind
answering our many queries that we had !The farm owners were very kind – they even didn’t mind coming at 10.30 in the night to help us settle …

All in all, we loved the place and would prefer this cottage over any other any day ! Just made our trip more pleasant …

  4. Eirian, Hendy says:

Hi Rob, sorry, we’ve stocked up on the mugs and teaspoons now. I’m glad you had a nice time. Come back and see us again soon. Eirian.

We had a lovely holiday here at Hendy. The owners were friendly and helpful. The cottage itself has lots of Character and is spotlessly clean and well maintained. We had two young children under three who loved stopping on a working farm.
The surrounding beaches are sandy and absolutely beautiful.

I would recommend staying here and would love to return again.

Just had a special holiday in Hendy staying for a family wedding. The house is beautiful and cosy – we were all impressed by it. A warm welcome from the owners too. I really hope to come back in the near future and I will recommend it to friends.

With the holiday still fresh in our souls,
I thought I should post this.
This cottage is a real treat to stay in,
It felt really comfortable from the off and the owners are very friendly and approachable.
We had a fantastic week in what is a outstanding landscape, beautiful!! come rain or sun.
    Wish I was there now.
    Enjoy your stay!

We stayed in the Hendy for a long weekend in early October with anther couple and our two dogs. We had a wonderful time! The cottage is so charming and well maintained. We absolutely loved it!

We enjoyed our stay very much. The house is very well restored and maintained -we were particularly impressed with the quality of the bed linen and high standard of finish to everything. Our only very small criticisms would be- the oven is difficult to use as the dial numbers have worn away so setting it was guesswork! And we couldn’t bear to use plastic wine glasses so we left 6 real ones for future guests! But we may be unusual as we love cooking and eating in so this may not matter so much to other people! And if you do go out to eat-visit Bermo Bistro in Barmouth -it is superb-but you need to book as its very small! The views from the house are beautiful-you could sit there all day and not get bored-if the sun is out which it wasn’t for a lot of our stay! All in all it was a very restful week and fulfilled all our expectations. Don’t miss the Welsh Highland Railway if you love trains!

  10. Trish O'Dowd, Manchester says:

Had a lovely stay at Hendy. The house was beautiful and contained everything needed for a comfortable stay. Lovely fresh eggs awaited us on our arrival. The dogs and cats kept the kids entertained and were always around to welcome us back after our days out. Would definitely recommend going to see Nantcol waterfalls and doing walk number 17 in the book “Short family walks around Snowdonia” which is in the drawer of the large dresser. Beds were very comfortable and we had many a lie in!

  11. Anne & Kez-Bucks says:

We had a lovely time during our stay at Hendy-the cottage was fabulous-double clean and sparkly-some nice pieces of beautiful old furniture.
The dogs and cats on the farm were adorable. Our dogs were more than happy-there was a nice picnic table outside on top of a hill that we occasionally sat in the eves with a glass of wine watching the sun go down.
There was somewhere to pop the dogs in the morning and last thing at night for their ‘wee’s’
The owners daughters where so welcoming and left us to it-which we love but were there if any problems arose. We shall definitely be booking again for next year-just checking our dates and will get the week booked. Double whammy-the weather was ideal-doesn’t happen a lot in Wales but when it does it is quite something!!

  12. Paul & Krys , leicestershire says:

What a beautiful place to stay ! The farmhouse was built in 1856 and all it’s original features have been maintained with all the mod cons you need adding to a great experience . Set in a 200 acre working farm and only a mile or so from the sea , great views and the owners were lovely . We would highly recommend a visit to Hendy farm and will be returning again ourselves .

  13. Robbert Beerens, Berkel-Enschot, NL says:

After a long journey from The Netherlands we stepped into this very nice cottage, owned by an also very nice family!
The house was perfect for us with 3 children. For a week we had the most wonderful daytrips in this more than beautiful country. We could even comfortably warm ourselves in the sun, outside on the small terrace!
The view over the landscape to the sea is fantastic. Pity you just can’t walk directly to the beach via a short route. Should you try: beware, you’ll land on the nearby airfield first….
After one week we had the opportunity to spend 2 more nights in the B&B from Eirian and Iwan and we must say: nothing was to much, so thanks to you both!

In a nut shell: a perfect location and wonderful owners, so well worth a stay!
