Moelfre | Self Catering Barn Conversion Farm Dyffryn Ardudwy Snowdonia

Moelfre, named after the mountain behind the cottage, is a one bedroom barn conversion on a working welsh hill farm. It’s difficult for me to be objective when describing Moelfre as it’s one of the two self catering cottages that we let out ourselves here at Byrdir. But I hope you’ll agree when I say they’re nicely furnished and decorated. We’re certainly very proud with the way they’ve turned out.
Using local craftsmen to completely rebuild an old disused barn, has meant that we’ve been able to use as much natural and local material as possible. Nick and Adam did most of the structural work including laying the natural slate tiles on our heated floor. Mike, a carpenter from the village, hand carved the oak trusses and glazed gable end. Whilst stonemasons Charlie and Rich, two brothers and friends of ours, did a brilliant job of the external granite stone work. (I was allowed to help with the backbreaking but unskilled work of fetching the stones from the fields.)
We’ve designed the barn with a ‘grogloft’ or sleeping deck up in the eaves of the barn. The velux window up there has a brilliant view over the farm, Moelfre and the Rhinog Mountains. The living area downstairs has an open kitchen. We’ve tried to include everything you’ll need such as a combination oven, hob and dishwasher. The underfloor heating provides more than enough heat but we’ve also installed a cast iron log burner to help create that romantic atmosphere. The french doors open to a fantastic view of the Cambrian coast line and the Llyn Peninsula beyond.

We’ve tried to buy the best fixtures and fittings possible. Including hand made brass lamps, oak furniture and real leather sofas. The bathroom has been kitted out with a powerful thermostatic shower and expensive taps etc. But more importantly perhaps we’d like to think that we’ve invested some time and effort into smaller projects like renovating an old cast iron radiator for the bathroom, making the curtains by hand, restoring some old furniture bought at our local auction and buying some nice ornaments made by friends and neighbors.

Moelfre is on the grounds of our farm here at Byrdir where we also run a small B&B (have a look at www.byrdir.co.uk for more information). During the summer months, when the B&B is open, we’ll try and persuade you to join us for a cooked breakfast in the main farmhouse free of charge. Although you’re naturally free to stay in bed and cater for yourselves if you prefer. There are lots of other advantages to staying here on the farm. It’ll give you a chance to get involved in things like feeding the pigs, collecting the chicken eggs and meeting the ducks. Throwing a stick for our border collie, Dell, seems to be the favorite pastime of most of our guest however. Great views in every direction. Views over the Cambrian Coastline and its sandy beaches a mile to the west, Snowdon and her friends are to the north and you are naturally encouraged to explore the rugged Rhinnog Mountains that climb up behind the cottage to the east.
The other attractions associated with Snowdonia are all close by. Historic castle and golf course in Harlech, narrow gauge steam railways in Porthmadog and Talyllyn, slate and copper mines in Bleuna and Beddgelert as well as more adventurous pursuits like kite surfing, white water rafting and mountain biking etc. Let me know what you fancy and I’ll point you in the right direction.

Loved the views and the ambiance of the area which was beautiful through all the weather we experienced, rain and shine..
Unfortunately we were too lazy to sample the breakfast that comes so highly recomended, but we catered for ourselves each night and morning.
I was happy to find a nice TV with plenty of channels and a fantastic crisp picture to cosy up with before bedtime, the décor spot-on..
The whole place was very clean, and I enjoyed a comfortable sleep, my favourite thing being the velux window that was lovely to poke out of and take in the fresh air and views..
I am glad that my parents recomended Byrdir to me, I would not want to stop anywhere else..
We stayed at Moelfre for my husband’s birthday on 22nd / 23rd of Sept and really enjoyed our stay. Very clean, comfy bed and great breakfast over in the main house.
We felt very welcome and it was no problem to use our laptop in the main house to check our ongoing directions etc.
The Spa shop 5 mins away has enough to pick up last minute reserves and despite the awful weather we did enjoy a beautiful sunset looking out over the surrounding countryside.
We would definitely return, perhaps during the summer to explore some of those great deserted beaches on the doorstep…
Breath taking beautiful!!! We picked this place on pictures from the web site and the fact that we wanted a ‘away from it all’ type of break. and thats exactly what we got. Our stay couldn’t have been more relaxing and enjoyable. We were made to feel very welcome and nothing was to much trouble from Gwion!! (No sign of Louise) can see who dose the hard work Gwion!. I personaly love this part of Wales and have stayed in the nearby village of Talbont
This is now our little retreat when the work load gets to much and we need to unwind…..
total must to experiance for everyone. We loved the log burner especially in chilly November!

The breakfast is delicious at the main farm house. And we enjoyed popping across most mornings. Gwion and his dad are great hosts. We felt very welcome and were given some great suggestions of things to do.
This part of Wales is beautiful, with fantastic beaches, big castles, caves, waterfalls and if you fancy a walk up in the mountains. The Rhinogs behind the farm are rugged and as untamed as anywhere south of Scotland. They feel very wild and you can find solitude here. In fact you probably wont see anyone else on your walk.
The highlight of our long weekend was being invited by Gwion to go up to the cow shed to see and cuddle the 3 day old piggies. How cute they were too!
We celebrated the New Year in absolute luxury in this beautiful barn conversion, Moelfre. We arrived in the dark and got a very friendly greeting from Dell the border collie and Gwion. The accomodation was warm and comfortable and the log burning fire was just what we needed on cold winter nights. Waking in the morning to such wonderful views, clean air and quiet surroundings was a joy. We were lucky enough to have dry weather for most of our stay and sampled some pleasant walks in the local area, including a climb to the top of Moelfre after which the property was named – well worth the effort for the views on a clear day!!
We would highly recommend Moelfre to anyone who is looking for a place to get away from the daily grind and still wishes to enjoy their home comforts.

After staying at Moelfre in November 2010, we came back to celabrate my 40th birthday in February. A warm welcome from Gwion and Dell.
Again we had the most relaxing time. The walk to the beach was refreashing in the wind and once we arrived at the beach it was breath taking. (A must for all visitors).
Caernarfon castle is a beautiful place to visit, along with snowdon. we didnt climb snowdon as it was a wet day but plan to conquer it in the summer!
A beautifull place to unwind and relax. hope to see you in the summer.

We stayed at Moelfre in March 2011 for Rich’s 30th birthday – it was our first visit to Wales and we couldn’t have had a better stay.
We were greeted by the whole family (including piglets!) on arrival and were made to feel welcome straight away.
The cottage was beautifully decorated, with amazing views across the hills! The log burner is a lovely.
This is the perfect get away from it all and we certainly cannot wait to come back again for another visit.
Moelfre was even nicer in the flesh than in the photos and the welcome was warm and friendly. There are some fantastic views on the walks surrounding Moelfre, down to the dunes and right across to Snowdon.
The beach at Harlech is well worth a visit, especially when no-one else is about and Port Merion in the sun is strange but enchanting.
We will definitely be visiting this part of the world again.
We were back at the farm for the 3rd year and our first time in Moelfre – it’s just a wonderful location and it was great to be able to climb the hill of the same name behind the farm to really appreciate what a fabulous location it is. On top of that – great hosts, fabulous accommodation, a great breakfast – you simply couldn’t ask for more – we’ll be back!!
We had a fabulous time at the Moelfre cottage. Gwion and Louise are the perfect host and hostess. The farm animals were a big hit with all the guest. The accomodation and breakfast were excellent as was the natural beauty of the setting (midway between the coast and the mountain, with great views of both.)
We spent a week and it was the highlight of our UK visit. We visited several spectacular nearby castles. We had time for great hikes through the sheep meadows and peaceful walks along the ocean. We almost made it to the top of the Moelfre – maybe next time. The views were just spectacular. We look forward to returning to this piece of paradise and hope we brought some of the serenity back home with us.

Our stay at Moelfre was just perfect – not even the rain could dampen our spirits! Gwion, Louise and all of the farm animals were so welcoming, and the placement between sea and mountains was beautiful.
All of the beaches were lovely but Harlech in particular was our favourite. Overall we had a cosy, comfortable weeks stay, and will hopefully be returning very soon in the future!
After a 15 year break it was great to re-visit Byrdir and the surrounding area and find it just as peaceful as it ever was. No matter what the weather was like it was always a pleasure to return from a day out to the stylish comfort of Moelfre. Gwion was so welcoming and nothing was too much trouble for him. The “welcome pack” on our arrival in Moelfre was much appreciated. Louise’s mega breakfasts kept us going all day and we loved the informal, friendy atmosphere surrounding the whole place. Many thanks to you both for a relaxing and very enjoyable holiday.
Had a great week staying in Moelfre. The cottage was lovely and is finished very tastefully. The whole farm is very pretty and in a great location. Gwion and Louise were perfect hosts. Their advice on the local attractions was most welcome. The choice at breakfast was more than we expected and tasted great.
We would like to return to Snowdonia in the future and we will certainly consider returning to Byrdir.
Our first staty at Moelfre was fantastic. We arrived to a warm welcome from the lovely Del and a very warm and cosy lodge. The weather we experienced was the proper Welsh stuff but are spirits were always lifted upon returning to a toasty fire.
Gwion provided us with some fantastic advice during our stay for routes to walk and places to park, however we could have done with someone to open all of the seven gates we had to drive through – we even made it top the of Snowdon. In the snow!
The location, accomodation and views were just incredible. Bydir is a must see and we will be returning – hopefully in the not too distant future.
We can certainly recommend it to anyone wanting a relaxing weekend to escape from …. everything!

We had an absolutely fantastic time on our long (and wet) weekend in Wales! The cottage was just perfect and the photos on the website don’t do it justice.
Also, the local residents being a rag tag gaggle of ducks and 3 fat hens joined us for breakfast most mornings which was very sociable! (I even managed to stroke one!)
We did most of the walk up the Seaward Mountain (Moelfre) but decided that the large rain cloud coming in was enough to run us back down the hill
We will definitely be staying again, waterproofs at the ready!

We had an absolutely fantastic couple of days. The hottest last week of March we’ve ever known.
Our two year old Jakob had the time of his life, playing with Del and following the ducks, heading up to the farm.
