Nant | Self Catering Barn Conversion on a Working Snowdonia Farm
Property Type: Cottages, Dyffryn Ardudwy, Farm Stay, Real Fire, Sleeps 2-3, Sleeps 4-5
Nant, which means brook or spring in welsh and refers to the small brook that runs past this cottage, is a two bedroom barn conversion in Dyffryn Ardudwy. Its difficult for me to be objective when describing Nant as its the larger of the two self catering cottages that we let out ourselves here on the farm. But I hope you’ll agree when I say they’re nicely furnished and decorated.
Using local craftsmen to completly rebuild an old disused barn, has meant that we’ve been able to use as much natural and local material as possible. Nick and Adam did most of the structrual work including laying the natural slate tiles on our heated floor. Mike, a carpenter from the village, hand carved the oak trussees and glazed gable end. Whilst stonemasons, Charlie and Rich, two brothers and friends of ours, did a brilliant job of the external granite stone work. (I was allowed to help with the unskilled but backbreaking work of fetching the stones from the fields)
The cottage comprises a ground floor twin bedroom in addition to a kingzize double in the ‘grogloft’ or eves of the barn. The living area downstairs has a small kitchen where we’ve tried to include everything you’ll need including a combination oven, hob and dishwasher. The oak folding doors which span the south facing gable end of the cottage can be opened up completly to make the most of the view of the fields and mountains on the far side of the brook. The underfloor heating provides more than enough heat but we’ve also installed a cast iron log burner to help create that romatic atmosphere.
..on a working welsh hill farm..
..complimentary cooked breakfast..
..sandy beaches to the west..
We’ve tried to by the best fixtures and fittings possible. Including hand made brass lamps, oak furniture and real leather sofas. The bathroom too has been kitted out with a powerfull thermostatic shower and expensive taps etc. But more importantly perhaps we’d like to think that we’ve invested some time and effort into smaller projects like renovating an old cast iron radiator for the bathroom, makeing the curtains by hand, restoring some old furniture bought at our local auction and buying some nice ornaments made by friends and neighbours.
Nant is on the grounds of our farm here at Byrdir where we also run a small B&B (have a look at www.byrdir.co.uk for more information). During the summer months, when the B&B is open, we’ll try and persuade you to join us for a cooked breakfast in the main farmhouse free of charge. Although you’re naturally free to stay in bed and cater for yourselves if you prefer. There are lots of other advantages to staying here on the farm. It’ll give you a chance to get involved in things like feeding the pigs, collecting the chicken eggs and meeting the ducks. Throwing a stick for our border collie, Dell, seems to be the favorite pastime of a lot of our guest. Great views in every direction. Views over the Cambrian Coastline and its sandy beaches a mile to the west, Snowdon and her friends are to the north and you are naturally encouraged to explore the rugged Rhinnog Mountains that climb up behind the cottage to the east.

The other attractions associated with Snowdonia are all close by. Historic castle and golf course in Harlech, narrow gauge steam railways in Porthmadog and Talyllyn, slate and copper mines in Bleuna and Beddgelert as well as more adventurous pursuits like kite surfing, white water rafting and mountain biking etc. Let me know what you fancy and I’ll point you in the right direction.

We didn’t get the chance to thank Louise for her wonderful breakfasts (our trousers were tighter when we got back). Gwion was a cheerful host and full of useful local information. We really hope to return.
We had a lovely time in your fantastic Nant Cottage, its done to a very high standard with great decor, my kind of taste. Thank you for the very kind welcome and the lovely touch of the cider, cheese, biscuits, cake etc. I think the highlight of our stay was meeting your gorgeous dog, could have spent hours playing with her, she’s amazing. You have a fantastic location with stunning views, could not fault anything. I will be recommending you to friends and family, will hopefully see you all again in the future. Have a great Christmas and prosperus New Year, many thanks, Shaun
Absolutely stunning place to visit.. Couldn’t fault it!
Warm & welcoming hosts, beautiful accommodation (very snuggley & warm in the winter) and incredible views. We’d love to come back please!
Beautiful location in a lovely part of Wales. The cottage was lovely and the people too, and the welcome basket is a nice touch. We were also blessed with nice weather for the time of year (early March). Del the dog will keep you throwing sticks all day if you let her…….
Just back from a long weekend staying in Nant, absolutely fantastic accommodation, lovely welcome from Gwion and Louise, met the famous dog who was adorable, also saw the lovely piglets.
Can not wait to go back some time next year
Thank you
Nant was everything it appeared to be on the website and therefore did not disappoint!!. Easy to find yet perfectly secluded. Had a fabulous girlie break and hope to return with the family as such a beautiful area. Will definitely be recommending to friends.
We had a great time again at this charming renovated barn. The perfect way to get away from it all. Wake up naturally to the sights and sounds of nature every morning. Close to the mountains and the coast. We’ll be back again one day.
Thanks again and see you soon.
Best Wishes from Germany,
Paul and Ruth

Gwion and Louise – Thanks you for allowing us the experience to stay with you in such a beautiful spot in Wales, you are wonderful hosts, the farm was lovely, he Cottage (Nant) was perfect, the breakfasts were lovely, and our two boys thoroughly enjoyed being pig feeders for the week (apologies for the over enthusiasm at the start of the week!). We shall certainly be recommending you to all our friends and family, and we shall definitely be back – we have fell in love with the beautiful location and the beaches there are second to none – and thanks to for ordering that superb weather – I never expected we would be on the beach all day so late in the season and we even went in the sea – this place is FANTASTIC. Thanks again -( oops sorry) – I mean Diolch…… see we even learnt a few key phrases of the local lingo too!!
Kind regards
Cath Steve Luke & Liam Harrison
Gwion and Louise- despite the dreadful weather, your wonderful piece of Wales was a bit of heaven for a week. Nant is a lovely, cosy place to stay and surrounded by this magnificent countryside we really enjoyed our stay. The positive side to all the rain was that the waterfalls were stunning and the rivers dramatic.
The pigs and I had many meaningful conversations and they promise me there WILL be baby piglets when we return! I also intend to go into training before then so that I can keep up with the dog-she’s wonderful.Love the way the ducks let her round them up.
The welcome pack and the very tasty breakfasts were much appreciated (oh yes I have been on the scales) but the best part of our stay was the relaxed atmosphere and friendliness. We returned rested and much refreshed. Thankyou so much, see you next year.
We had a wonderful stay at Nant Cottage! It was so warm and cosy not to mention immaculate!! You could easily tell that a lot of care and attention had been spent on refurbishing this lovely cottage. There was lots to do in this area and the beach was beautiful. We climbed Snowdon and visited Swallow falls with Nant making a perfect base. Thank you so much for a delightful mini break!!
Our family had a really good holiday in Wales and especially enjoyed the excellent accommodation and breakfast. The beaches nearby are very good and we loved crabbing in nearby Barmouth. The surrounding scenery and landscape is very special with mountains in one direction and beautiful beaches in another. Coming from Norfolk, we aren’t used to hills…never mind mountains!
Our children, aged 7 and 8, both said it was there favourite holiday they’ve had and they did very well walking up and then down Snowdon. There’s lots to do in this part of Wales and i wouldn’t hesitate to recommend staying at Nant.
If I lived nearer I would be coming back for a mini-break soon!
Had a great time in Nant. Lovely breakfast in the farmhouse.Perfect location with easy access to coast and mountains. Very friendly welcome from Gwion and Louise and Dell the dog + chickens + ducks. Accomodation ideal for 2 adults + 2 children with nice airy feel in day and cosy at night. Great shower.
Thats it. Now you can go and see for yourself.
Thanks
Hope to return soon
We had a fabulous extended weekend staying at Nant. A truly delightful cottage, with so much care and attention to detail throughout. Enhanced further still by the sound of the little stream running alongside (from which it takes its name). For those chilly winter evenings, the log burner is fantastic too.
Louise & Gwion were fantastic hosts, with the warmest of welcomes and wonderful homemade cake on offer throughout our stay.
A big thank you to Lowri and Seren too for keeping our daughter Maya entertained – she misses them already !
A superb place to stay, it really is, and highly recommended.
Just returned from a very relaxing week at Nant. Wonderful accommodation, everything we needed and very cosy and quiet. Superb breakfast every day and Gwion & Louise very friendly hosts. Girls loved the animals and were missing Dal as soon as we drove off. Nant is a great base for exploring the attractions of North Wales. Will no doubt be booking again soon.
We had a gorgeous time, thank you. We loved the location, very peaceful, beautiful and calm.
