Pant Golau | Self Catering Accomodation

Pant-Golau is Welsh for sunny or bright valley. And it certainly was the day we visited. This newly refurbished house is on the end of a charming little row of three cottages in a little hamlet called Pensarn. But the country setting belies what is quite a posh and modern property inside. Chic, I think, would be the right word. There’s a thoroughly modern kitchen-diner with all the facilities you would expect. But character is added by an exposed stone wall and the oak lintels which sit above two large windows. With sea views of course.

Plenty of room in the lounge too. Three huge sofas face onto a traditional cast iron log burner (for the romantically inclined) and quite a large flat screen TV just off to the left (for the not so romantic). And the sense of style continues with large hanging prints complementing the soft furnishings and décor. Sea views again of course. There’s also a ground floor shower room and WC on the ground floor.

Four bedrooms upstairs. Two doubles and two twins, perfect for a large family or two smaller families. Everything’s brand new, so as you’d expect, the beds are comfy and the linen is all clean and crisp. And all the other boxes have been ticked, bed side lamps, large wardrobes, luxurious carpet, tasteful curtains etc. Oh, and the sea views are even better up here.

To the rear of the property there’s an elevated back garden complete with decking and BBQ.

Location

As mentioned, Pant-Golau is one of a small collection of houses in Pensarn which is a mile or so to the north of the charming little village of Llanbedr. Just about walking distance to the pub but maybe a car journey if you’re carrying shopping back from the shop. Both pubs in the village serve food. The Victoria Inn has a fantastic beer garden and the ‘Ty Mawr’ has a selection of real ales and a fantastic atmosphere especially when there’s rugby on the TV.

Harlech with its famous castle and 18hole links golf course is five minutes away by car and the larger seaside town of Barmouth is about ten minutes away in the opposite direction. So plenty of other restaurants and shops within easy reach.

The cottage itself overlooks the Artro river estuary and the famous Shell Island. Fantastic blue flag beaches are dotted all along this coastline but one of our favorites was Llandanwg beach just a mile up the coast. We ordered a pizza from the small café there before sitting on the beach with a glass of chilled white wine and watched the sun dipping down over the mountains of the Llyn peninsula. Idyllic.

The little lane leading to the cottage eventually leads up towards Cwm Nantcol and the lake at Cwm Bychan. So the cottage provides a great base for walking, cycling and fishing. The lake holds brown trout and a fish known locally as “the red bellied char”.

Walking on Harlech BeachWe hardly like to say what a lovely location and cottage we found in Pant-Golau as it will probably mean that when we come to book it again we won’t be able to !
Clean, comfortable and tastefully furnished and decorated throughout, everything we could need for a happy holiday had been provided.

    Thank you

A lovely cottage, very well equiped, clean and comfortable. A little undersold on the website as no mention of the garden, downstairs shower & W.C or off street parking.

Eight of us shared, four adults and four children and it didn’t feel squashed at all. Would love to have stayed longer but it was already booked

Just returned from a week in this beautiful cottage where I stayed with 5 other adults and a 5 year old child. Fantastic location for exploring Barmouth and Harlech. Loved having the shop and pubs within walking distance. Very well equipped for children and loved the bedrooms and bathroom! Did not want to get out of the shower! We did have 3 cars and it was a bit of a squeeze getting all 3 into the drive, but managed it. However, don’t use the neighbours drive to turn round on as she told us off, albeit we only did it once and for about 30 seconds to let a passing car go (it is a single track road). Walks to Shell Island and Nantcol Waterfalls highly recommended from the cottage. Also recommend hiring bikes in Barmouth and riding the Mawddach Estuary trail as this was lovely and there is a nice pub at the end where you can stop off to refuel! For all you walkers out there, if you fancy a change from Snowdon, Cadair Idris was just as spectacular. Had a lovely birthday meal in Harlech at the Plas restaurant. We didn’t book and it was a bank holiday but we still got in and they catered for children too. Reasonably priced set menu and beautiful conservatory and garden overlooking the Harlech coastline. A spectacular week and fantastic weather!

Very comfortable and well-equipped cottage, and “upstairs” garden. Only disadvantage was the loud screech from the hot water supply unless you turned it immediately to maximum flow. Got told off for waking my grandchildren when shaving before 8 am on our first morning! Splendid shower though.

Most exciting days, from my point of view anyway, were the Roman steps up to Bwlch Tyddiad and a trip on the newly-opened Welsh Highland Railway.

Some of the local footpaths marked on the O.S. maps are not as well sign-posted as they should be!

  5. helen heath, stroud says:

very comfortable cottage, with lovely views from the garden. Loud water pipes woke us all when the first one up ran the hot water so no alarm clocks needed.
The beaches nearby were perfect, and the Nantcol waterfalls stunning, especially if you follow the falls to the very top, follow the blue posts.
All in all a very good holiday

Pant Golau have had the plumbers in and I quote “The noisy hot water pipes have now been silenced, so peaceful lie-ins now available at Pant Golau”

  7. Phil Barrett Oswestry says:

A much needed weekend break. Amazing accomodation and location.

Rock pooling on the beach near Harlech with the dogs was great.

Relaxing evenings with a beer or two in the raised decking and garden.
    Plus 22 degrees in March
