Y Felin | Self Catering Cottage with Sea Views and Walking Distance to Pub

Y Felin is in the rural village of Dyffryn Ardudwy in Snowdonia, half way between Harlech and Barmouth on the Cambrian Coast road. A short grassy drive leads up to a private but sunny garden. (It never rains in Wales, honest!) Slate stepping stones guide you to the front door of this beautiful, typically asymmetrical, 17th century stone cottage.

Open the door and step onto the warm slates which cover the ground floor. (This under floor heating is a marvellous thing) Modern facilities, dishwasher, washing machine etc are combined with original features like the ledged and braced doors and exposed beams.
There’s a cosy lounge complete with obligatory inglenook or ‘simne fawr’ eith cast iron log burner. Perfect for those romantic evenings cuddled up together on the couch. Upstairs there’s a modern bathroom where the complete with ceramic bath and power-shower and there’s a nice view of the cows from the bath if you leave the curtains open. The two bedrooms are nicely furnished and all the linen was crisp and clean.
Both bedrooms have window seats overlooking the coastline about half a mile away. One disadvantage of this period property however was the painfully low doors. But I learnt to duck by about the third day. In front of the house some old barns and stone walls combine to provide a secluded courtyard type garden. Surrounding that is a 4 acre field which came with the property and was perfect for our Border Collie.

The train station is about half a mile away and the bus stop is just up the road. But best of all there are two pubs within walking/staggering distance. Dyffryn was a nice village complete with a small grocery store and butchers, post office and garage. The historic town of Harlech is 10minutes drive to the North and the seaside town of Barmouth is 10 minutes to the south. Moelfre and the Rhinog Mountain rage is just behind you and the beach is just in front of you.
Lots to do in the area, Harlech has it’s famous castle of course as well as a 18 hole links golf course. We also enjoyed our time at the pony trekking school in Dolgellau, a nearby market town.

Had a lovely long break, cottage fantastic, love the underfloor heating! Discovered the visitor centre at Coed Y Brennin. Great tea’s and shortbread not to mention the cycle routes. Wonderfull area. Will visit again.
Plenty to do, lots of good places to eat. Went to Portmeirion on boxing Day –avoid the restaurant at Castell Daedraeth or check the bill carefully – they tried to charge us and extra £25-00! And the service was terrible. The walk to the local beach is not too long – for those who are not of the walking persuasion! All in All a wonderful week. The cottage and the family running it are second to none – as you will have seen when you walk in.
Thank you very much for a great week in your lovely cottage. Visited all around the local area and had a couple of outstanding meals especially “La Plas” (WELL WORTH A VISIT). HARLECH. Great beaches nearby where Bean (Visla) could run and run. The fire is a must and really ends a great day in front of the tv with your feet up.
Have had a lovely week. We came for a walking holiday + managed 4 walks within 5 days. Away from Snowdon hotspots would recommend The Dysynni Valley walks from Llanfihangel Y Pennant. The area is ‘monumentaly beautiful’. Also circular route from Beddgelert was well worth the effort (even in snow + sleet!) The cottage is lovely + cosy to return to. (new converts to underfloor heating.) Visited slate mine at Llechwedd on day not walking. Well worth a visit. Deep mine tour excellent. Time went too quickly. Will ensure we visit again + recommend to others.
Have had a few very peaceful days here in the lovely cottage. Have walked along the beach to Shell Island and gathered quite a collection of shells which will go in the garden at home as a constant reminder. Attempted Snowdon, but discovered half way up that had chosen the most difficult route!! Must do homework next time. (Legs still aching 2 days later). Barmouth + Harlech both charming. Didn’t have time to do everything that we wanted as so much to do!! We’ll be back, Thank you Gwion + Louise.
A superb week at the cottage – every comfort and well equipped. The ‘Welcome Basket’ was greatly appreciated. The Arriva Coast railway was extremely useful and excellent value. It saved having to find parking and some of the rather large car park charges. The only drawback – it does not dovetail witht the Ffestiniog Railway Timetable. Looking forward to the opening of the full route of the Welsh highland Railway. A week of fine weather certainly helped us to have such an enjoyable holiday.
Had a lovely week at the cottage – comfortable, picturesque and everything works. Walks down to beach just a good distance. We recomment ‘The Plas’ Restaurant, and the chips are declared ‘wonderful’ by my wife (who is an expert) Evening Meal very good, not cheep but it’s good to ‘push the boat out’ once on the holiday. Steam train trip to Ffestiniog from Porthmadog very enjoyable. We definetly would come back to enjoy another wee.
Throughout our week here we enjoyed visiting the local beache. Very much enjoyed crab fishing got 70 crabs on our last night. Enjoyed the slate mine mainly the deep mine. We have settled in so much that now it’s time to go home, could have done with another week. Thank you for making us feel so welcomed.
We had a lovely few days at Y-Felin, it’s a gorgeous cottage, beautifully done & so well kept – we loved the underfloor heating too!
We stayed fairly local, walking in the hills behind the village & in beatiful Cwm Nantcol. Very quiet time of year, but The Plas in Harlech opened just for us & we had a lovely meal there!
We have just returned from a long weekend at Y-Felin. The cottage is immaculate, homely and the attention to detail and modern living appreciated. We spent the days mountain biking the Mawddurch Trail and climbing Tryfan. The weather was perfect and I will remember my birthday weekend with affection. Many thanks. We loved it!!! We have just had a long weekend at Y Felin and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it, everything about it was just perfect – hope to return again soon.
The cottage was very clean and the underfloor heating was fabulous in the cool evenings. Would thoroughly recommend both the cottage and the location for anyone wishing to walk, explore beaches or simply unwind. Hope to return again next year.
We spent a perfect week in Y Felin in April 2010 and enjoyed fabulous sunny weather. The cottage was ideal for two couples plus one and a half dogs ( a German shepherd and a toy poodle!). It was hard to say who liked the cottage best, us or the dogs. We walked up to the top of the Roman Steps, one of my all time favourite walks, and explored the two burial chambers in Dyffryn, one just by the main road and the second on the hill above. The Mawddach trail along the banks of the estuary was spectacular in the unusually warm spring sunshine, especially ending with lunch at the George III pub by the Toll bridge. Of course the beaches and dunes of Harlech and Dyffryn were at their best: the sea was a mill pond and we virtually had the place to ourselves. It was great to come back to Y Felin and relax in the garden in the sun. We had a great time and would thoroughly recommend the cottage to everyone. Louise and Gwion provide a very warm welcome and we will definitely be back soon.
We stayed at Y Felin for the last week in May 2010 and had a fantastic time. The sun was out and it was lovely and warm all week. The cottage was ideal for us ( 2 adults), with sea views from the bedrooms and a lovely garden for relaxing and enjoying an evening glass of wine in. The cottage had all the facilities we needed for the week and was in a good location .The garden was great for our Jack Russell as it was plenty big enough for him to run about in but also secure . The walk to the beach from the cottage is nice and we saw a great sunset . There is a pub by the railway crossing on the walk back to the cottage which does good food for supper. We all thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend Y Felin especially to those with a four legged family member. The booking process was easy and emails were answered promptly. Thank you.
We stayed at Y Felin for the last few days of May and first few of June, and had a lovely time. After a rainy day around Harlech (great castle), we then had a wonderfully hot and sunny week. We had bikes with us, and loved cycling along the beach cycle route; those miles of clean, sandy beaches are beautiful. Having such easy access to both coastal and mountain scenery was ideal.

Lovely, peaceful cottage. Weather raining – no surprise there then, – picked mushrooms in local field.
ideal place to excercise one of our slightly older 4 legged companions.
We didn’t do much, as we just chilled out after a recent family bereavement.
Next time will be more adventurous.

Recommend local butcher, should have bought more meat to take home! , not being a huge meat eater high praise indeed.
Lovely enclosed garden for our dog Roxy , Barmouth is just down the road and is a lovely seaside town with great little shops and cafes we also visited the waterfalls STUNNING.
Really didnt want to leave and cant wait to go back .
A cosy and well appointed traditional Welsh cottage with superb nearby unspoilt beaches and walking country. The cottage gardens are enclosed and dog-friendly. Having previously stayed at Byrdir b&b (also owned by Gwion and Louise), the cottage completely met our best expectations – same warm welcome and attention to detail. Thank you for the loan of the book , I will return it next time around.
We stayed at y feline for a long weekend and had an absolutely lovely time our lurcher Santa loved the beautiful sandy beech especially playing in the very big sand dunes!! The views from the property were wonderful and the house itself was so comfortable and beautifully furnished with a fab log burner that kept us snug. Property is in a great location as there are plenty of local shops and pubs and Barmouth and Harlech only 10 minutes drive away, we also went to Snowdon for the day which is just under an hours drive. Can’t wait to return and explore more of this beautiful part of Wales.
Thanks to Gwion’s flexibility we had a last minute change from Nant to Y Felin. We thought the mile long walk from the village would be a bit too much due to the heavy snowfall. We have visited the area many times and done lots of things but our pre-Christmas trip this year was more of a chill out. The boys loved the grounds of the cottage and spent lots of time playing in the snow. At times we even ventured further afield to go sledging or walk past the station and the holiday park to the sea. It was great to see the contrast between snow, sand and sea at the coastline. The cottage was fantastic, a great base for an active holiday or a warm comfortable environment just for relaxing. The underfloor heating was a real plus for the time of year. We will no doubt be back but we are now going to be spoilt for choice as to where we stay. Was looking forward to staying in Nant but Y Felin was a great venue.
The four of us (2 couples) thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this very well presented and well equipped character cottage. A first time to North Wales for all of us, we were all blown away by the breathtaking scenary of Snowdonia and the coastline. Staying in a traditional old cottage was the perfect compliment to this and what a great and private location Y Felin is in. We were comfortably able to reach the towns on our list; Betwsy y Coed, Caernarfon, Conwy, Pwellhi and Barmouth and return home in the evening to enjoy the wonderful peace and tranquillity of Y Felin.
We were able to make good use of the woodburner to keep us warm and cosy, it also created a wonderful ambiance as we played various games. The furthest of two pubs was only a 10 minute walk which allowed us to nip out for a swift half or two and enjoy some Wesh hospitality.
Y Felin created for us a very relaxing and comfortable break, none of us would hesitate to stay there again.
We arrived on a beautiful sunny evening to the wonderful cottage of Y Felin. We quickly settled in and were able to enjoy the peace and tranquility of the garden, something we enjoyed throughout our stay. The location is ideal and there are plenty of local provisions. We enjoyed the local walks and beach aswell as the option of going further afield. We would not hesitate to recommend and re-book in the future.
We only booked Y Felin on a whim just before Feb half term started, fancying a winter short break. We were delighted with the cottage both inside and out, being full of character and comfort, in a lovely location, and most importantly for us, being safe and ideal for our dogs as well as us. With a lovely garden and big field beside the property, the convenience of the village facilities within walking distance, and a lovely walk to the beach from the doorstep, the only fault we could find with this holiday was that it was too short! We’ll definitely be back soon!
Me, my sister and our partners have just got back from a fabulous weeks break at Y Felin. The cottage was very cozy and the underfloor heating a luxury on cold tired feet after long walks. The beds are very comfy and it has all the facilities you need as well as being in a peaceful but still a great location, just a short walk to the gorgeous long stretch of clean sandy beach, three pubs all within walking distance, two of which are on the way back from the beach, bonus! We had three nine month old pubs with us who had all thought they had died and gone to heaven with plenty of exploring to do in the paddock and the stunning walks embedded in the Welsh countryside and beach walks along the coast and sand dunes. Only a 5 minute drive into the quiet but picturesque village of Harlech which has fantastic views and just a 10 minute drive into the slightly busier but much bigger town of Barmouth. Dolgellau is less than half an hour and has some nice pubs and shops and a big pet store for all your needs including a vet just in case you need it. Porthmadog is not too far a journey either but we preferred the prettier towns, although we did find the best fish and chip shop there! Dolgoch falls is a MUST DO and is a short but beautiful walk surrounded by stunning waterfalls and gorgeous countryside, it’s only a 45 minute drive on the way to Tywyn on the interesting back roads and is certainly no boring journey! We would definitely recommend Y Felin! And since this is the second dioni cottage holiday we’ve had and thoroughly enjoyed, I’m sure we’ll be back next year, the cottages are very well looked after, cosy and clean! It’s the perfect UK getaway! Thank you Dioni!
