Things to do in Bala
Bala is set right in the heart of Snowdonia amongst mountains, rivers and lakes. Walking, white water rafting, cycling, sailing, canoeing, kayaking are readily available and the town itself has a great range of restaurants, pubs and cafes, catering for all tastes.
BALA ADVENTURE AND WATERSPORTS
This family run business offers a variety of activities all run from the famous Llyn Tegid (Bala Lake). Activities include: canoeing/kayaking, climbing/abseiling, windsurfing, sailing, archery, camp craft, raft building, mountain biking, powerboating, hill walking, gorge walking, and whitewater rafting. From a day out to committing to a number of courses, there are many options for everyone – one of the great things to do in Bala.
BALA GOLF COURSE
This 10 hole course is situated 1000 above sea level, so as you can imagine, the views are incredible. Booking is available online and green fees start from £15.
WILD WALK WALES
Based at the foot of Snowdon, this company offers a diverse range of activities including wild walks, guided hill and mountain walks, orienteering programmes and award schemes. They have recently introduced wilderness expeditions.
GET WET ADVENTURE COMPANY
Get Wet offer paint balling, high ropes course, gorge walking, raft building and white water rafting. They offer various packages which you also have the option to add in a pub lunch if you so wish!
RHELLFFORDD LLYN TEGID (BALA LAKE RAILWAY)
This 9 mile trip around the lake take approx an hour. All trains start and finish their day from Llanuwchllyn. There is free car parking as well as a buffet, souvenir shop, toilets and picnic tables. Prices start from £6.50 for an adult single or £9.50 for a return.
Is a family run business and one of the largest karting circuits in the UK. As well as being open to the public, they hold a number of professional, televised events that are held throughout the year. There are a number of different activities available and there is a cafe on site.
STAINED GLASS WORKSHOPS
If you have ever fancied making your own stained glass window? Whether you are looking for a full course or a 2 hour taster session, illumin-arte offers unique experience.
Glan Llyn offers a 4 lane bowling alley that is open at certain times to the public. So if you are stuck on a rainy day, you might want to see if its open.
As well as the activity centres on the lake, there are a number of sandy areas that you can sit and enjoy the waterside; swimming, enjoying a picnic and taking in the views. If you’re up for something a bit more adventurous, join in one of the many activities available on the lake.
Barmouth is the closest beach to Bala itself and has a great promenade where there are a number of beach front cafes, a little train running up and down throughout the day and a harbour at the south end that houses some great restaurants and cafes. The amusement park is a stone’s throw away. Part of Barmouth beach has a blue flag status and so needless to say, swimming here is good. There is plenty of food and drinks available throughout the day from surrounding cafes and shops so you dont have to lug a great picnic bag down here if you’re not in the mood!

- Blaenau Ffestiniog is where you will find Bounce Below (an underground trampoline experience), Zip World Caverns (an incredible, underground exploring activity) and Titan (first 4 people zip line).
- Conwy Valley is home to Zip Safari (a series of 23 zip lines through the trees), Plummet (jump from a 100ft tower), Skyride (Europe’s highest 5 seater swing), Treetop Nets (nets suspended in trees 60ft above the ground to run around in), Fforest Coaster (an alpine coaster that runs throug the forest at exhilarating speeds) and Tree Hoppers (a woodland experience for younger ones).
- Bangor is where you will find Velocity (the fastest zipline in the world and the longest in Europe).
SURF SNOWDONIA is an artificial surf lagoon where they create continuous and perfect waves. Perfect for beginners and those who are looking to improve. No waiting around for the next set of waves. At the centre, there is also a total wipeout waterwall, the ‘blob’ which will see you flying in the air, a soft play centre, a skate ramp and a couple of onsite restaurants/cafes
THE NATIONAL WHITE WATER CENTRE on the river Tryweryn in Bala offers one of the best places in the country to white water raft. The water levels are dam-controlled meaning its rapids still thunder down the river during the summer months so you will never be disappointed by the conditions.
The walks in the surrounding area are both incredible and numerous and whilst in the area, you absolutely should take advantage of this. For some ideas of where to walk, you might be interested in these websites:
Mud and Routes is a great information resource for walking in the area. Simply enter where you would like to walk and it will give you some tried and tested routes.
Geocaching is popular in this neck of the woods and if you love a treasure hunt, then this is a great way to while away an afternoon.

Based just north of Dolgellau, is mountain biking heaven. Ranging from routes for beginners to the more advanced it is fantastic. Free to get in, you can either rent a bike there or take your own. If not all the party are up for cycling, there are also wonderful walks. Take a picnic as there are lots of picnic tables or there is also a cafe that serves food.
This is an uplift and downhill MBT trails and is better suited to more advanced mountain bikers. You will need to pre-book a space and you can hire bikes there. Again there is a cafe and other activities on offer.
THE MAWDDACH TRAIL
(Barmouth – Dolgellau) this trail follows the old train tracks. If you leave from Barmouth and cycle across the bridge, you turn left at the end and follow the trail all the way down to Dolgellau. A good day trip is to cycle to the George III pub and have lunch or a drink and then cycle the 7 miles back. Its flat all the way and so a good family route as well as for those looking for a leisurely day.
R. H Cycles and Gro Cycles are the local places to hire bikes in the area.
The Bryntirion Inn (The Bryn to the locals) is in the town and offers fine ales and good food.
The Eagles Inn again is in Bala itself and offer a good pub menu, fines ales and a pub garden.
The Plas Coch offer wide variety of food throughout the day including breakfast.
White Lion on the high street also has a good pub menu.
Palé Hall is where to head if you have a special occassion to celebrate. A privately owned, Victorian manor house which in the past has seen the likes of Queen Victoria stay. A British / French modern and classic cuisine and be sure to adhere to the dress code to avoid disappointment.
The Bison Grill on the Rhug Estate offers incredible steaks, burgers and the like – all from the farm so fresh and organic are top of the list. It closes at 5.30pm.
Tegid Cafe on Bala Lake is a great location and offers hot meals as well as tea and cake!
Ty Coffi Plas-yn-Dre Coffee House on the high street is more of focus on drinks and cakes Caerau Uchaf Cafe at Caerau Gardens always comes highly recommended.

Y Badell Aur (The Golden Frying Pan) is where the locals go and that says alot!
