Tan-Y-Wenallt is a ‘ty unnos’ or ‘one night house’. An ancient and well known tradition here in Wales. During the 18th century, a time of rapidly expanding population and poverty, it was generally agreed that a property could be built by squatters on common land so long as it was built within 24hrs, one day and one night. The test being that smoke had to emerge from the chimney before sunrise the following morning. The occupier was then allowed to claim a portion of the surrounding land. The boundary being set by the distance he could throw an axe from the new house. It’s most recent renovation has transformed it into a truly idyllic and luxurious holiday cottage!
