Bright And Airy Holiday Cottage In The Hills | Alwen

Alwen is a bright and airy holiday cottage in the hills of North Wales. This recent barn conversion with a modern open plan layout has been furnished with real style and elegance. The inclusion of a welcoming log fire combined with it’s quiet remote location make this the perfect destination for couples wanting to get away from it all.

Bright And Airy Holiday Cottage In The Hills | Alwen

The open plan living area has floor to ceiling windows that run along the length of this room giving it an ultra modern feel. Teal kitchen units are offset by 3 large lamps that hang down over the work space. All the appliances are new and there is everything you would need and expect for catering during your holiday. The contrasting vintage fold down dining room table and chairs works really well against everything else.

The sitting area is again simple and stylish. A corner sofa and retro arm chair provide the seating and the small tables, a mix of wood and teal bring it altogether. The large wood burner at the end of the room brings that essential cosy element. The fire and the underfloor heating will naturally make this spacious room toasty warm in those winter months.

The bedroom has a more romantic almost mediterranean feel to it.  A beautiful bed with velvet headboard and lots of plump cushions is flanked by some beautiful bedside lamps and terracotta walls. The ensuite bathroom has white brick style tiles in contrast to the wooden floor and a shower over bath arrangement.

Location

Plenty of off street parking at this cottage and a large gravelled and private patio area with outside seating and BBQ.

The cottage is situated in the heart of the Alwen Forest, just a few minutes walk from the Alwen Reservoir.  The reservoir is over 3 miles long and surrounded by over 26 miles of tracks through the forest and moorland that are ideal for walking or mountain bikes and the cottage is unique in that miles of cycle lanes and forest tracks are accessible right from your front door. The Alwen reservoir itself is only a five minute walk away.

A 40 minute walk away (or less than 5 minutes by car) is the Brenig Reservoir which has wonderful view across the hills of Wales and also a modern visitor centre and cafe. You can also hire bikes, boats, go fishing and explore the circular route that surrounds the lake.

The cottage is 16 miles away from the famous tourist town of Betws Y Coed and 11 miles from the more traditional market town of Bala. Betws Y Coed is home to the Swallow Falls and the Fairy Glen as well as the Marin Mountain Biking trail and Zip World Fforest with its zip wire safari high in the tree tops and the new 1km long zip Fforest Coaster ride.  Bala is where you will find all the watersports on Llyn Tegid including SUP, Kayaking, canoeing and sailing. The National White Water Centre is here too.

The larger castle town of Conwy is under an hour away, as is Portmeirion and Surf Snowdonia, a unique inland surfing lagoon near Llanrwst.  Snowdon and Zip World are also under an hour away and is a beautiful drive through the heart of the mountains. Foodies might also enjoy popping in on the award winning Rhug Farm Shop or the wonderful Bodnant Food centre.

Visitors here during Jan and Feb will enjoy the possibility of snow as the cottage is located above the snowline.

    Two year Wedding Anniversary Stay!
    15th to 19th of July 2020
    .
    Great bed – very comfortable
    .
Lovely kitchen layout – plenty of utensils to use – had all the basics of crockery, cutlery, oven dishes, knife block knives, chopping board and many other items
    .
Good oven and decent dish washer
    .
Having a splashback at the stove would have been good
    .
Bathroom layout was nice – Great skylight – water pressure via kitchen tape and shower head would not have a constant flow – water pressure went fast to slow – annoying when your trying to have a shower
    .
Plenty of skylights through the property which I loved – awesome natural light coming through
    .
A food waste bin would have been great – we did plenty of cooking and had food scrapes
    .
Recycling and general waste bin – Wales is big on this
    .
As description states, no WiFi and phone reception – this was fine with us – just an FYI if you were curious
    .
    Lovely view
    .
TV is free to view channels – system was slow to load Guide or change TV
    .
    Nice surroundings
    .
Plenty of places to go for walks without needing the car or drive far

Just returned from an amazing week at Hafod Y Llan. Right from the start Lucinda and Scribble gave me and my two dogs the most warm and wonderful welcome. Nothing was too much trouble for Lucinda including refencing part of her garden just so that my tiny terrier rascal couldn’t find the smallest of gaps through the fence and gate which is completely dog proof for any other dog!!!!! In addition when my little rascal went missing Lucinda and Scribble both came out to help!!!! Very quickly my girl was found with their help!!!!!
Furthermore, the accommodation was 5 star!!! Warm, welcoming and kitted out perfectly. The welcome pack was spot on including wine and chocolate biscuits. Even a dog bowl was provided. In a perfect location with so many walks from the door step I hardly used my car. I can not recommend this place any higher. Me, Rosie and the little minx Lily will certainly be back!!!!

  3. Alan Hartley says:

Was a little disappointed there is no view just a big hedge in the way and wifi would be really useful as there is no phone service but I would still recommend staying there lovely location cottage was clean and comfortable we enjoyed our stay

The barn is beautifully designed and decorated. It has all the requirements for a relaxing stay.
Lucinda has provided extra little touches of tea, coffee, biscuits and wine, water in the bedroom.
Set in beautiful gardens she has created a lovely outdoor space to sit in.
I would highly recommend this place for a stay. Simply beautiful.

  6. Katie Critchley says:

We had the most wonderful & relaxing time! The Alwen reservoir was a great 7 mile walk, not a difficult one but great to tire out the doy. The cottage was cosy and decorated beautifully.. we will definitely be back! Our favourite UK break away.

  7. Katie says:

My partner & I enjoyed this barn so much, it’s in a great location in the forest by the reservoir, the peace & quiet is great. We were on a four day biking holiday & all the mountains we wanted to bike up were not that far by car. Would highly recommend this barn for people who enjoy the out doors & being away from the noise of towns. Would definitely return.

  8. Malcolm, Jayne & Tilly says:

Excellent location for a relaxing break. We loved the area and the local walks. Very comfortable property.

If you want to eat out though plan ahead.

Would recommend Abuls Spice in Corwen if you like Indian food. The Italian, Con Amici in Denbigh was also excellent. Both are a good 10 mile drive away though.

  9. Rena says:

This was such a treat to stay here for a couple of nights. Beautiful and incredibly well designed with our furry friends in mind. Everything you need! We will definitely be back!!

  10. Julie/Wendy says:

We had a fabulous 6 night stay in the perfectly formed and we’ll layed out barn we even got snowed in that made it even more cosy and gave us more of a chance of exploring a few of the many walks from the door. If you want a quite location with main roads not too far away and a relaxing quite break then this is the place for you, the fact that it had no wifi unless you stood by the top of the drive or in the track was in fact a pleasure

  11. Charlotte says:

Loved the cottage, very high standards of finish throughout. Particularly loved the unique location, the great views, peace and quiet, and numerous walks from the door, were perfect for us. Will definitely be going back.
