Elizabethan Manor House Set In Beautiful Countryside

Elizabethan Manor House Set In Beautiful Countryside

An Elizabethan manor house set in the beautiful Snowdonia countryside in North Wales. The architecture of this amazing property is matched by its rich and fascinating history. If only buildings could talk. The grand fireplace would reminisce how it had warmed the toes of the native princes of Wales. The oak paneled walls in the King’s Bedroom would giggle of the soft snoring of Charles II. The library would whisper of the clandestine plans of the revolutionary Owain Glyndwr and the secret staircases leading down to the servants quarters would blush with stories of flirtatious encounters.

The King's Bed
..amazing architecture..
..fascinating history..
..beautiful countryside..

A mile long oak lined driveway leads us up from the coast road up to the hall. A magnificent granite gateway heralds our arrival. The hall opens up in front of us as we sweep along the circular driveway. That enriching crunch of gravel as we step out of the car.

A heavy oak door opens onto a small entrance hall and then onto the main lounge. A huge fireplace sits on the far wall. An old leather sofa and matching armchairs face the flames. A fascinating collection of antiques and historic artifacts line the oak paneled walls.

The dining room next door is equally grand, a central dining table comfortably seating up to 14 guests. Big tall windows filling the room with a soft light. The adjoining kitchen is smaller and more modern in appearance. Recently renovated, this room and the utility next door are very well equipped and have all the modern appliances you’d expect. There is also a games room to keep you entertained with pool table, table tennis and drinks bar.

A second living room is more Victorian in style. Beautiful moulded plaster roses, corbels and cornices adorn the ceiling and walls. A grand piano sits in a large bay window and a large rug sits atop of the original oak floor. The perfect space for afternoon tea. Later on in the day however, guests might like to adjourn to the library. Another real fire but this time the walls are covered with a myriad of books both young and old. A flat screen TV in the corner is a welcome modern addition perhaps.

A majestic central stairway adorned with intricate wooden carvings lead us to the first floor bedrooms. Seven bedrooms in total, each one individual in their own way but each equally magnificent. Incredibly tall ceilings, big comfortable beds and huge windows overlooking the surrounding lawns and the countryside beyond. The bedroom arrangement is a bit confusing with a maze of doorways and hallways leading in every direction. Guests will have to pass through some bedrooms to get to a second so have a look at the floor plan to make sure it suits your group.

There are four bathrooms upstairs two of which still have their original Victorian bathtubs and all are wonderfully luxurious and well appointed. There are two more WCs on the ground floor.

Location

The formal gardens surrounding the hall are equally lovely. The gatehouse, design by the famed architect Inigo Jones, stands guard over a huge expanse of lawn complete with your own private lake. Beyond the lake the oak woodland has been designated as a site of specific scientific interest due to its rare flora and fauna.

Head west along the old drovers road through the surrounding farmland to Llyn Bodlyn lake and the mountains of southern Snowdonia. Alternatively, head east back down the drive and guests can enjoy miles of un-spoilt sandy beaches.

Lots of activities in the area. Adrenaline fuelled days out on the zip lines in Blaenau or mountain biking in Coed Y Brenin might be popular with some. More lazy outings to The Royal St David’s Golf course or a tour round Harlech Castle might be favored by others. There’s one pub just within walking distance through the woods with a wider selection of hostelries and restaurants a short drive away in Barmouth or Harlech.

Our Party of 13 had a Fabulous weekend at the Manor House to celebrate my wife’s 65th Birthday, we had a Murder Mystery night on the Saturday which everyone enjoyed as the setting was perfect. Most most of our time was spent in the great Hall with a roaring log fire that our four grandchildren kept going with the plentiful supply of logs provided.

A really large house, full of character, with every modern convenience ….brilliant. Would love to go back

Fabulous place – we were a party of 13 including 5 children. We loved it – log fire and plenty of logs. Well equipped kitchen and lots of bathrooms. Would definitely go there again.

What an amazing, quirky place. Have just returned from a fabulous 3 night stay to celebrate my 50th Birthday. The decor and furnishings are in keeping with its character and property very well equipped. We utilised all 7 bedrooms as there were 14 adults and no complaints.
We had outside caterers in one evening who were absolutely fantastic.
My only negative would be that there is not enough glasses when catering for 14 and no champagne flutes.
The water went off briefly due the torrential rain we had that blocked the filters but this was soon rectified.
    Plenty of fire wood provided.
All in all fantastic and I would have no hesitation in booking again. Thank you.

What a fantastic property! I booked this as a surprise for my UK and German family coming and we spent a wonderful weekend at Cors y Gedol. There were 11 of us and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience, especially the German part of our group – they’d never seen anything like it
The house was well equipped and the bedrooms were very comfortable. As the weather was not at it’s best we especially enjoyed the evenings in front of the enormous fire in the baronial hall as plenty of logs were supplied.
Can thoroughly recommend the Manor House.

The hall was in keeping with its age with some nicely refurbished bedrooms ,all very comfortable beds. The Kings bed chamber and bathroom were quirky and huge and in keeping with the age of the property. With such a large place it is difficult to keep clean and two of our party suffered hay fever type reactions due to the dust. It is obviously a venue that is being repaired and upgraded bit by bit but well worth a stay for the historical value .

  6. It was a great experience to spent time in a unique old building of 1576, really surprise how this has maintained and well equipped and We loved our stay.

The most fantastic 50th birthday loved every minute .

  8. Arndt says:

What a great week we had, celebrating my 50th birthday with ten friends. The house is spacious, warm, comfortable, well equipped, clean, and has tons of unique features – and character. And the beds are about the most comfortable I have ever come across, including my own.

One of our friends called the week “legendary”, and the house played a large part in it.

If the following suggestions sound like nitpicking, they just show on what a high level any criticism of the manor house is. First, the water pressure and general shower situation makes it really hard to keep 12 active people reasonably clean. And the lack of any coffee making facility in the house has been taken care of by our purchase of a french press. Enjoy!

  9. Jim Beashel says:

A great house for a large group to share – we were 3 families consisting of 6 adults and 8 kids.

It is a very social house which works well and the kids loved exploring.

You have to time your showers due to the water pressure but be realistic with your expectations given the age of the house and it’s a lot of fun.

Any issues we had were quickly resolved by Ben.

Absolutely fantastic weekend with my family in this extraordinary manor house , we all enjoyed staying in this lovely place ,

  11. Catherine Booth says:

Well we have enjoyed another wonderful break at this magnificent house, thank you for the lovely welcome hamper and the plentiful logs. We were warm as toast as November turned cold. We enjoyed a fun packed family weekend at this unique and very special place. We will be back – just glorious!

  12. Diane Henry says:

Stayed at Cors y Gedol for a week from 14th October. It was my 50th birthday celebration with my family. The hall was everything and more that I was expecting. Beautiful setting in Snowdonia a house filled with history and atmosphere, far too many special features to mention…just look at the pics. We themed my birthday night to Tudor/Elizebethan and made memories that will never be forgotten. Thank you Ben and Beth for sharing this wonderful place for others to enjoy.
