Gothic Styled Mansion Near The Beach in Llanbedrog | Glyn-Y-Weddw

This Gothic styled mansion near the beach in Llanbedrog was built in 1857 and was originally part of the famous Madryn estate. Now run as an art gallery by a charitable trust, the rear wing of this impressive building has been lovingly converted into self-catering accommodation. Don’t worry, the wing is quite private, you wont be one of the exhibits on show!

Glyn-Y-Weddw

A private entrance opens up into a large entrance hall with a wide staircase leading up to the accommodation. A stair lift is available for anyone with mobility difficulties. As we walk along the 1st-floor corridor, the first door on the right leads into the dining room. Towering sash windows and high vaulted ceilings ensure plenty of light and air. A spiral staircase leads up to a mezzanine area above the dining room where there are two extra single beds if required.

From here we can walk left into the kitchen. All the usual appliances including a washing machine, tumble dryer and dishwasher. If we return back through the dining room, we can walk straight through into the lounge. The lounge is a bit smaller than the dining room but plenty of seating and that all-important TV.

The best thing about staying in the wing of an art gallery of course is the artwork that that is used to adorn the walls of the accommodation. A lovely collection of mostly local artists provides that extra touch of charm and fascination.

There are four bedrooms on this first floor. Two double rooms with en-suite shower rooms, and two twin rooms. One of the twin rooms has a shower cubicle and washbasin but no wc. Finally we have a family bathroom with a bath plus separate shower cubicle, wc and washbasin.

There is one more double en-suite bedroom on the ground floor. This room is naturally more detached from the rest of the accommodation so may not suit younger children. But older relatives may appreciate the opportunity to get away from the hustle and bustle upstairs.

Location

The grounds to the mansion are as impressive as the building itself. Although you will have to share these with gallery visitors up until 5pm when the gallery closes. Green lawns and picnic benches look out onto Cardigan bay and the mountains of Snowdonia. As short walk will lead you down to the golden sands of Llanbedrog beach famous for its colourful beach houses. Guests are also encouraged to explore the recently created footpaths that wind their way through the woodland next to the mansion. The main trail through the property forms part of the All Wales Coastal Pathway.

The ever popular and fashionable town of Abersoch is a short 5 minute drive away and has a great selection of pubs, restaurants and trendy shops. The larger harbor town of Pwllheli is 10 minutes in the other direction. The newly built marina has over 400 pontoon births including visitor births and hosts a number of national and international sailing events.

Llanbedrog is arguably one of the nicest beaches in North Wales but a short drive in the car will take you to lots of other hidden coves and small seaside villages. To the east, the mountains of Snowdonia are a natural home to an ever-growing number of adventure activity providers.

Fantastic place for a big family get together (including the dog). All ages enjoyed the holiday. Would recommend it to anyone. Local pub very family friendly.

  2. Kearns says:

The first time we have stayed here after 5 years of visiting Llanbedrog. A fantastic situation and accommodation for a family get together made even better by two weeks of sun. We will be back.

  3. Molt Family says:

Great house in fabulous location – very well equipped. Everybody impressed. Many thanks!

  4. Sheffield says:

Perfect location, stunning scenery, beautiful house. Well equipped with loads of activities to keep a bunch of city slickers amused in the lovely countryside. Food in café downstairs was amazing.

  5. Woods Family says:

Fabulous surrounding to celebrate my Mum’s 70th birthday. It’s over 35 years since we visited Llanbedrog and we’ve returned many happy memories! It’s amazing to think all those years ago this building was here and we never knew! Keep up the good work with the gallery! – Excellently stocked kitchen!

  6. Mike Etherington says:

Once again Glyn-y-Weddw played host to three generations of family. Aunts, Uncles, in laws, Grand mothers and cousins.
What a superb location. Views that stop you in your steps and in the evening when the gallery is closed it is all yours.
    Fabulous. Thanks.

  7. Susan Wishart says:

The accommodation is ideally placed for a short walk to the beach, the Cafe which is very good and a pub which is good. The bedrooms were comfortable plenty of bathrooms kitchen had everything we needed, the sitting room is a bit small but ok. The staff were very helpful and friendly. Great walks on the doorstep. There were 12 of us and we would certainly return.

  8. Liz says:

We had a wonderful two night stay with our family. Perfect venue, everything we needed was provided – and very welcome refreshments , and a fabulous bars brith!
The whole place was well appointed and it was good to have such great art on the walls. A real treat.
We have decided it should be an annual event.
    Many thanks

Great accommodation in a superb setting in great area. Could quibble about paucity of information and instructions e.g. Central Heating(which sadly we needed due to dodgy weather!) Also definitely needed towel & toilet-roll holders in some of the rooms. Overall though a well-equipped and spacious house (technically wing!) of character with plenty of scope and conveniently situated next to an excellent cafe.

  10. Annie Davey says:

We really enjoyed our stay. The mansion was very spacious and well maintained. The situation is absolutely stunning and very close to an amazing beach. The weather was glorious and we enjoyed a couple of BBQ’s outside. Unfortunately there are no amazing views from the accommodation like there are from the gallery. Café staff were very friendly and helpful. We had to go out and buy towels and hand wash – I couldn’t remember reading anything about that and there was none in the property – and we didn’t find the hairdryer until we were packing to go home!! We will definitely visit this area again.

Perfect location for an extended family gathering. Plenty of space, beautiful surrounding and things to keep everyone happy from youngest 9 to oldest 79.

  12. Denise Winrow says:

We really enjoyed our stay here, the weather was very kind, views on this coastline are stunning. The house (mansion?)had plenty of space for us all. The gallery staff were very friendly too. Whilst the house is very nicely furnished and well equipped you do need to bring a few extras, eg hairdryer, toiletries, but this isn’t an issue. A map of llanbedrog would be handy.
