Luxurious Barn Conversion In The Foothills Of North Wales | Maerdy Barn

Stone stepping stones through a secluded private garden leads us to the solid oak front door of the barn. From the spacious entrance hall we turn left into the living room. This is an open plan room with a large dark wood dining table at one end. Surrounded by heavy dark wood dining chairs and flanked by a magnificent antique cabinet and sideboard the dining area feels surprisingly formal and refined.

A more relaxed environment is created at the other end of the room with three sumptuous sofas facing onto a wood burning stove. As well as a large TV, this area has the added luxury of an overhead projector that can shine your favourite DVD or sports event onto the wall in front.

From here, a small flight of three steps leads down to a galley kitchen. Everything you need is included. Microwave, dishwasher, fridge freezer (with ice maker) and a lovely large cooking range are all there. A glass-panelled back door opens out onto a small decking and BBQ area. So not too far to walk when you need more ice in that gin and tonic.

From the lounge we can also proceed up a flight of carpeted stairs to one of the 4 bedrooms. This spacious double bedroom has en-suite bathroom with shower over bath. High vaulted ceilings give a sense of space and light whilst floor level windows and exposed oak beams give the room that little extra touch of comfort and luxury.

We have to return back through the living area and to the entrance hallway to get to the other bedrooms. The first double bedroom is on the ground floor. This room benefits from large glass French doors that lead directly out onto the front garden. A modern four-poster bed sits on velvety solid oak floor. The adjacent en-suite is equally luxurious and includes a large walk in shower.

Back into the entrance hallway we climb a flight of carpeted stairs to the two remaining bedrooms which are both twin rooms. Both of these rooms have en-suite shower rooms, original oak beams and are spacious and beautifully presented.

Located as it is just to the East of the Snowdonia National Park, the barn has the advantage of being easily accessible from England yet remote enough to ensure a peaceful and tranquil holiday. A private garden with decking and plenty of outside seating is a great bonus on sunny days and the secluded BBQ area to the rear of the cottage is perfect for alfresco dining. But at some stage during your holiday I’m guessing you’ll want to venture away from the cottage. At least for a bit.

The town of Ruthin, some 15 minutes to the North, is famous for a bloody rebellion in the 1400’s. Today the town is much more peaceful luckily and is home to couple of nice pubs, shops and restaurants and a castle making it well worth a visit.

Bala, some 20 minutes to the West is famous for it’s water sports. Llangollen, and Betwys-y-coed famous for Swallow Falls are not far and you can take steam train rides from Corwen to Llangollen enjoying the views of the river Dee and the stunningly beautiful wooded Dee valley surrounded by hills and mountains. Sailing and canoeing can be enjoyed on Llyn Tegid whilst the Tryweryn River is a world-renowned centre for white water rafting and kayaking.

There are lots of other independent activity providers in the area offering everything from bike hire, to zorbing and tubing, from gorge walking to 100mph zip lining, archery, stand up paddle boarding and canal trips. Also there are many walks for those who wish to explore the diverse and rural landscape in the surrounding areas.

  1. Emma Jones says:

We had a lovely week away at the beautiful Hidden Barn near Corwen in North Wales.

We were supposed to be going to a popular seaside resort on holiday this year, but we chose to cancel for a more peaceful and quiet holiday away from the crowds, and we are so pleased we made this decision as this holiday was simply perfect.

The owners (Stuart and Reiko) attention to detail was execellent and they have thought about absolutely everything.

The Hiddden Barn is very luxurious and has been decorated and kitted out to an extremeely high specification.

The location was perfect and it was easy to get to so many beautiful North Wales sights within a short car journey, such as; Lake Bala, Llyn Brenig, Loggerheads and Clocaenog Forest.

Stuart and Reiko were the perfect hosts, they gave us their contact details if we needed anything or had any questions, but allowed us to have uninterrupted peaceful break which is just what we all needed.

The Hidden Barn is highly recommended by all of us, and we will definetly be returning for another stay.

    Thank you Stuart and Reiko

  2. Simon Adams says:

We had a lovely week long stay at the Hidden Barn. The attention to detail is second to none and for a family of two, plus two daughters and their partners, plus a 4 month old baby this was just perfect. The location is central to many of North Wales great sights and activities and we could not have wished for a nicer place to return to each evening after days out on the lakes and rivers in the area. We had planned to go to Austria this year but Covid prevented that, so an easy drive from home in Swansea to North Wales was a great choice. Next year, or maybe this winter it will be an easy decision to return to the Hidden Barn again. Thanks also to Stuart and Rieko, the owners, for the local kayaking info. Highly recommended.
