Romantic One Bedroom Cottage Near The Beach | Derwen

Derwen is a romantic one bedroom cottage near the beach in the seaside town of Fairbourne. This traditional detached stone cottage has been beautifully renovated into a very elegant space yet remains homely which will make it a very appealing bolt hole for those looking for a luxury break.

Entering through the hand crafted oak stable door brings you into an open plan sitting room and dining area with an impressive oak spiral staircase up to the first floor. The large wood burner takes centre stage in this room which gives warmth to the minimal, yet very stylish interior. Slate floors, oak beams, large sofa and lovely furniture pieces all work towards giving this space a very comfortable feel; the tide clock will no doubt come in handy when planning your beach walks and the surround sound system is going to turn those DVD evenings into more of a cinema experience!

The galley kitchen at the end of the house has everything you will need and expect, including hob, oven, dishwasher etc along with a waterfilter tap. The finish is in-keeping with the rest of the cottage; modern and minimal with a homely feel.

Up the spiral staircase takes us to a beautiful bedroom with apex ceiling, creating a lovely sense of space and light. The arched doorway to the bathroom adds to the charm of this room. Simple oak furniture and bed linen all work well together to create a very calming space. The two large wadrobes provode plenty of storage space and the remote controlled velux windows and blackout blinds will certainly help you get a good nights sleep.

The en-suite bathroom has a large walk in digital rain shower; modern fittings combined with oak fixtures again fit with the rest of the house.

The garden, home to exotic plants like jasmine, passion flowers, palms and banana plants is a lovely place to relax when taking in the evening sun with a drink on the patio.

The blue flag beach makes for great beach days and is especially good for watersports such as windsurfing and sailing. The famous Fairbourne Narrow Gauge Steam Railway still runs daily.

This part of southern Snowdonia has spectacular landscape making it a walkers paradise. Less crowded than the slopes of Snowdon, the mountains in this part of the national park provide a real opportunity to explore the true wilderness of Wales.

A short 10 minute drive will take you into the more populated town of Dolgellau. Steeped in welsh history the town hosts a farmers market and is home to some delightful shops cafes and pubs. Corris, another nearby village, has the well known ‘Centre for Alternative Technology’ as well as a small craft village and ‘King Arthurs Labyrinth’, an underground tour certain to capture a child’s imagination.

The popular seaside towns of Aberdyfi and Towyn are a short drive to the south west. Bala, to the east, is famous for its fishing and whitewater rafting and the world renowned mountain biking trails of Coed Y Brenin are about 30 minutes to the north.

We had a wonderful stay at this stunning cottage which was very well appointed and comfortable though it took us a while to master the lighting controls! The bathroom was beautiful and we loved the shower.
We had a great time in the area, climbed Cadair Idris on a beautiful day, visited Betws-y-Coed, Portmeirion, Harlech Castle and Llangollen and would definitely recommend a visit to Yr Ysgwrn at Trawsfynydd, a very informative and moving experience. Were spoiled for choice in eating places but loved Indiana Cuisine, The Last Inn at Barmouth and the George lll at Penmaenpool.

Thanks for taking the time to write a lovely review Catherine.

We are delighted to hear that you found the cottage stunning. We want all our guests to enjoy a bit of affordable luxury. That is our philosophy. The lights can be used as normal lights by turning them on at the wall or by using the remote control. You were certainly active and seem to have enjoyed lots of places. Excellent choices on the eating front-lovely food in beautiful settings. It’s what holidays are all about.

We will follow up your recommendation on Yr Ysgwrn. Thanks for sharing that.

Also, thanks for leaving the cottage tidy.

      Best Wishes

Great little cottage very comfortable for two people. The interior is well thought out with every amenity and more, to make your stay that little bit special, Small secluded garden at the side for those balmy nights. Ideally placed for some beautiful sights in this part of Snowdonia with easy and pleasant walks on your doorstep or more challenging should you be that inclined. Useful shops and pub within walking distance and great public transport.

    1. Jo Tometzki says:

Many thanks for your lovely review Steve.

We are so pleased you had a great holiday and that you liked the cottage and felt comfortable. Also that you liked the location and saw lots of beautiful scenery.

The train station being so close by is very convenient and the train journey along the coast is very beautiful. We use it all the time. A car isn’t really even needed at the cottage.

Thanks for leaving the cottage tidy and we hope to see you again.

We have stayed in lots of cottages and this one is up there with the best. Perfect for 2 people with everything we could possibly need (especially liked the surround sound system it’s on our wish list for home now.) Loved the bedroom and bathroom big, bright and comfortable. It is situated in a great position to enjoy everything this area has to offer which is so much we couldn’t fit everything in to just the one week so we will have to come again!!
Climbed Cadair Idris – stunning views
Hired bikes in Barmouth and cycled the very flat Mawddach Trail to Dolgellau and back. Stopped at Roberts coffee shop while we were there for the best cakes ever !!
Went on a steam railway journey to some beautiful waterfalls … the list goes on so I’ll stop there.

Oh and dinner at the Anchor Barmouth – very good
The Gerorge the III – not bad and Bwyty Mawddach in LLanellytd for a special occasion – exceptional.

Agree about T. H. Roberts and their cakes. They do a great breakfast too. Delighted to hear you had a very special occasion to celebrate. Congratulations and Best Wishes for the future.

      Hope to see you again.

  4. Angela Hayday says:

We spent a fantastic two week holiday at the cottage which is furnished to a high specification and is cosy and comfortable. We enjoyed many evenings sat in the pretty garden sipping gin from the local Dyfi distillery. The cottage is very close to the Mawddach Trail so we cycled the flat route to Dolgellau for breakfast. Within a short time of leaving the cottage we were walking along the Estuary or in the mountains behind the cottage. There is a railway station a few minutes walk away so we caught a train along the coast just to experience the beautiful coastline. We walked to the beach on several evenings to watch breathtaking sunsets. If you want luxury accommodation, stunning scenery, friendly locals and helpful, friendly, thoughtful hosts then I highly recommend this cottage.

    1. Jo Tometzki says:

Many thanks for your lovely review Angela and Rob.

We are very pleased you enjoyed your 2 week stay. We have lots of guests staying for 2 weeks as the cottage is very comfy as well as luxurious, so it lends itself to longer stays. It’s good to see that you enjoyed all the things the local area has to offer, including the beach which is easy to walk to. Surprisingly, we have never tried the local gin, so we will be following your recommendation on that. The garden is certainly a sheltered and sunny spot to enjoy a tipple and an al fresco meal after a day out and about.

Best wishes and hope to host you again at some point.

Perfect spot for a break, lots to see and do within easy reach. Proximity to that fabulous rail coastal rail link a real bonus.

Arrival goodies hugely appreciated. I loved the wine and cake but, the real bonus after a 5hr journey and arriving late in the evening, was that I could just pu the kettle on for a cup of tea (all fixings provided). Thank you for that.
