Unique Self Catering Barn Conversion on a Working Snowdonia Farm

Self Catering Barn Conversion on a Working Snowdonia Farm | Nant

Nant, which means brook or spring in welsh and refers to the small brook that runs past this cottage, is a two bedroom self catering barn conversion in Dyffryn Ardudwy. Its difficult for me to be objective when describing Nant as its the larger of the two self catering cottages that we let out ourselves here on the farm. But I hope you’ll agree when I say they’re nicely furnished and decorated.

Self Catering Barn Conversion on a Working Snowdonia Farm | Nant

Using local craftsmen to completely rebuild an old disused barn, has meant that we’ve been able to use as much natural and local material as possible. Nick and Adam did most of the structural work including laying the natural slate tiles on our heated floor. Mike, a carpenter from the village, hand carved the oak trusses and glazed gable end. Whilst stonemasons, Charlie and Rich, two brothers and friends of ours, did a brilliant job of the external granite stone work. (I was allowed to help with the unskilled but backbreaking work of fetching the stones from the fields)

The cottage comprises a ground floor twin bedroom in addition to a kingsize double in the ‘grogloft’ or eves of the barn. The living area downstairs has a small kitchen where we’ve tried to include everything you’ll need including a combination oven, hob and dishwasher. The oak folding doors which span the south facing gable end of the cottage can be opened up completely to make the most of the view of the fields and mountains on the far side of the brook. The underfloor heating provides more than enough heat but we’ve also installed a cast iron log burner to help create that romantic atmosphere.

We’ve tried to buy the best fixtures and fittings possible. Including hand made brass lamps, oak furniture, and real leather sofas. The bathroom too has been kitted out with a powerful thermostatic shower and expensive taps etc. But more importantly, perhaps we’d like to think that we’ve invested some time and effort into smaller projects like renovating an old cast iron radiator for the bathroom, making the curtains by hand, restoring some old furniture bought at our local auction and buying some nice ornaments made by friends and neighbours.

Nant is on the grounds of our farm here at Byrdir. There are lots of advantages to staying on the farm….. It’ll give you a chance to get involved in things like feeding the pigs, collecting the chicken eggs and meeting the ducks. Throwing a stick for our border collie, Dell seems to be the favorite pastime of a lot of our guest. Great views in every direction. Views over the Cambrian Coastline and its sandy beaches a mile to the west, Snowdon and her friends are to the north and you are naturally encouraged to explore the rugged Rhinnog Mountains that climb up behind the cottage to the east.

The moment we drove down the lane to Nant we knew we had chosen the right place for us. The cottage was exceptional. It had everything we needed and more (best wifi ever, although that shouldn’t have mattered but still) Cleaned to perfection too. Every detail has been thought about inside and out. Underfloor heating means the cottage gets and remains warm. I think we only popped it on twice for 20 mins. The craftsmanship that has gone into the cottage is stunning. The position of Nant gives you the feeling of being alone in those beautiful surroundings. Louise and family are on hand should you need them. We loved being greeted by the animals and getting to interact with them if we wanted to, which we did. The hot tub under the stars is a must, as is a visit to Pauline the Pig, she is beautiful. We would happily return to Nant but looking forward to trying the other cottages they have on offer.

Fabulous family holiday, lovely mountain walks straight out of the front door, our daughter loved playing with the farm dogs, Del & Cariad, and feeding the other animals. Cosy Cottage with a woodburner for when the typical British weather strikes. Hot tub was amazing, even in the rain!! Lovely setting, and the owners were very welcoming. Thank you for having us, We can’t wait to come back. xx

  3. Liz Moulton says:

We had a lovely stay at Nant, cottage was very clean and in a wonderful setting. We loved the hot tub, esp as the weather was very British at times! We hired bikes from Birmingham Garage and rode the maddwach trail across the old railway bridge in Barmouth – views were spectacular. Would also recommend a trip to Aberdovey for crabbing.

  4. Rachel Trivett says:

We had a lovely stay in Nant. The view from the barn was amazing. There are lots of lovely walks from the farm and a good base to go further a field. The girls loved playing with the dogs and meeting the other animals.

  5. Tony Donnelly says:

Cracking location and Nant is a comfortable cottage with great use of space, the wood burner makes for cosy nights in & there is plenty to do in the area. The animals bring so much character to the place along with the fabulous views across the countryside. A great place to spend and week getting away from it all – thanks for having us.

Another fabulous week in Wales. This was our 4th stay in a Dioni cottage, and it didn’t disappoint. Full of character and in a stunning location we can highly recommend Nant as a great choice for a relaxing break in a beautiful part of Wales.

  7. Debbie Rowley says:

My partner and I had the most wonderful break. The Nant is a beautiful cosy place to stay with fantastic views of the Countryside. I loved waking up to see the sheep in the fields. We loved all the animals and it was lovely to find the hens and the playful dogs and Mog the cat joining us for breakfast, a real treat.

We would like to thank Louise for the scrumptious lemon drizzle cake, and the fresh eggs, the best we have tasted. We will most definitely be returning to stay in Nant again.

  8. Leo Garcia says:

My family and I had an amazing time in Nant. This is a beautiful cottage which is clean, warm, cosy, and surrounded by gorgeous countryside. The kids loved saying hi to Pauline the Pig, and were fascinated by the chickens, ducks, and playful dogs.

The main bed is super comfortable, and has a great view out into the fields. The kitchen is compact but has everything you need, and the wood burning stove really adds to the feel of the place. The shower and heated floors are also awesome.

The site is really quiet, and most of the time we could only hear the stream, the sheep and cows, cuckoos, and even tawny owls.

Nothing but good things to say about Nant – highly recommended, and we’ll be back!

  9. Nicki Ward says:

Fab stay. Loved Nant. The farm it’s family and all the animals were incredibly welcoming.
We found the can opener didn’t work was our only issue.
    Thanks for a great stay.

  10. Katrina Kerr says:

The Nant is an idealic retreat, set in a beautiful and peaceful location. With views of mountains and the sea, the Nant offers a good central base to explore the mountains and beaches. A beautiful location to come back to and relax after a busy day and sit on the patio to listen to the babbling brook. Our two boys loved staying there and meeting all the animals and the family. The accommodation is well appointed and supplies the basics needed.

  11. Elaine says:

Amazing short break . We loved everything about Nant, the owners are lovely and welcoming, the barn was spotless. Enjoyed having Gilbert and the other hens visit us each morning and both Dell and Cariad the farm dogs were happy for us to play wuth them ,Cariad likes to sit on your lap. The ducks were also a pleasant surprise. The views to the coast and also the hills beyond are good. The only enhancement I would suggest is to put a wood burning hot tub or pizza oven in the circular part of the garden in front of Nant

This is the third time we have stayed in Nant, it is perfect for us all and gives us a good base for our all too short stay but we will be back again next year.
