Self Catering Stone Farmhouse near Bala, North Wales | Ty-Mawr

Ty-Mawr is an impressive detached self catering stone farmhouse in Llanuwchllyn just outside Bala in North Wales. This part of North Wales is very popular with adventure sport enthusiasts and hopefully you’ll find this cottage a perfect base from which to explore.

..welcoming log fire..
..uninterrupted views..
..roll top bath..

There’s a nice well equipped country style kitchen diner complete with a very attractive and locally crafted oak table. A modern oven and electric hob as well as a dishwasher, microwave, large double drainer sink etc are all included. The washer dryer is in the adjacent storage shed / extension. This storage shed is secure and there’s plenty of room in there for boots, bikes or even wind surfers.

Two leather sofas sit in a large comfortable lounge in this self catering stone farmhouse. The paintings that adorn the walls are by a locally renowned artist and depict the beauty of this rural area. The log fire is naturally very welcome after a day of walking in the hills or sailing across lake Bala. A  flat screen TV should help entertain when the weather might be against you.

A nice feature of this property is the second lounge or study next door. If you’ve lost the battle for the remote control you might like to retire gracefully to this area and read a book in front of a second warming log fire.

Only two bedrooms upstairs which may seem strange for such a large property. One twin bedroom and one double bedroom. There is a sofa bed in that study if you wanted to invite some extra guests however.

Both the bedrooms enjoy fantastic views over the rolling hills and mountains of this rich and fertile part of North Wales. The curtains, linen and ornaments are all tastefully chosen and complement the cottage nicely.

I’ve left the best room till last. The bathroom is fantastic. It’s huge and dominated by a large freestanding roll top bath which looks out on that lovely view we talked about. There are of course no neighbours to worry about in this secluded self catering stone farmhouse. There’s also a separate large shower cubicle and a nice white bathroom suite.

The village of Llanuchllyn on the southern tip of Llyn Tegid (Bala Lake) is just over a mile away. The steam train that runs along the edge of the lake sets off from here. The village is also home the famous Eagle Pub. There’s a short cut across the fields back to the cottage, but don’t forget to bring a torch.

Bala itself is a 5 minute drive away and is a charming example of a welsh market town. A wonderful mix of traditional welsh culture and contemporary shops and cafés. The surrounding area has long established itself as a Mecca for adventure activities. Sailing, kayaking and windsurfing can be enjoyed on Bala lake with the help of Bala Water-sports and the world renowned Tryweryn white water centre is just on the outskirts of the village.

Sitting as it does on the Eastern edge of the National Park, this part of Snowdonia has the natural benefit of being easily accessible from the English road network. But seaside towns such as Aberdyfi and Barmouth are only an hour drive to the west. Similarly Snowdon is a little less than an hour to the North.

  1. Viki , Brighton says:

We stayed at this beautiful cottage from the 24th August 2013 for a week and it was absolutely wonderful. The garden is great and our boys ( 4 and 10) loved playing hide and seek and frisbees. The cottage is brilliantly located for all of Snowdonia , with fantastic walks and wildlife everywhere. Geraint the owner was lovely and helpful .We couldn’t fault it and would highly recommend it to anyone .

  2. Myall family, South Wales says:

Wow were the first words spoken from my husband and sons mouth, I think the dog was even overwhelmed by the size of the garden.
The cottage is lovely, we needed for nothing. Very comfy beds and the view from the bath were fabulous.Geraint the owner paid us a visit and gave us idea’s on places to visit nearby. The lake Vyrnwy and waterfalls at Pistyll Rhaeadr were fantastic, you won’t be disappointed.
The Eagles Inn is in easy walking distance, out of the back of the cottage, through the field, down the lane, freshly prepared food, good beer and friendly staff, what more do you need. Don’t forget your torch for the walk back.
    We will be definitely returning.

  3. Tom & Anne Marshall Herts says:

  4. Steve & Nicky...Jake the dog! says:

Great little cottage which feels like home from the moment you step inside. We were lucky with the weather for most of the time, but for the times it got a little cooler the heating does it’s job and gets the entire cottage warm…very warm! 🙂

There is a large barn which can be locked for all your bikes/canoes etc.
Plenty of private secure off road parking.

  5. Liesl & Paul, Milton Keynes says:

We’ve just had a fantastic week here. Wonderfully secluded but within easy driving of Bala for supplies and pub food / takeaways.
We had incredible sunny weather for the most part, but also some wonderful evenings with the fire crackling while outside the wind howled and the rain poured…bliss.
The house is everything that it is advertised to be, but so much better when you get to see it in person; there was indeed a loss of the remote control and the second lounge was used for some peaceful reading.
There is so much to see and do locally that we’ve barely scratched the surface, we’ll definitely be making a return visit.

  6. The Smith Family, Cambridge says:

We had the most lovely week in this really was home from home! Geraint popped in to check all was OK and had left wine and flowers which was a nice touch.
Our little dog loved the garden and so did the children. .great for Easter Egg hunts!
The views were perfect, nice local pub and fantastic walks from the front door. We would love to come back again soon.

  7. Kenyon, Somerset says:

We stayed for a week at Ty Mawr, nr Bala in this wonderful well equiped and beautifully furnished
farmhouse overlooking the distant mountains. It was lovely and clean and the owner was a real gentleman who called in to make sure we had everything we needed. We had a welcome pack on arrival together with a lovely vase of fresh flowers, a really welcoming touch. An added bonus was a lovely large secure garden for our two labradors plus a lockable storage room for boots and roofbox. We loved this cottage so much that we are booking again for this October or November. We would recommend this lovely cottage to anyone who wants that extra special holiday home.

  8. Ty Mawr, Near Bala says:

We stayed 4 nights and what a fabulous farmhouse. Spotlessly clean on arrival and totally luxurious accommodation, from the comfy beds to the reclining leather chairs. The huge bathroom was the icing on the cake !! Light the wood burner and settle down for a cosy night in. Fabulous views and surroundings. Just what we needed to get away from it all and take things easy.

  9. Adam, Wrexham says:

We stayed here for a short break in January when the snows came….it was lovely to be snowed in at this cosy cottage with the log burning stove keeping us warm and views of snowy mountains outside.

The cottage is well equipped and furnished to a high standard, and the owner Geraint is very helpful. Due to the weather we didn’t get the chance to get out much, although the lesiure centre in Bala has a swimming pool which is ideal for kids. Bala is a 5 min drive and has lots of pubs, cafes and shops.

I would certainly reccomend this cottage to those that wanted a quiet getaway in a beautiful part of Snowdonia.

  10. Ty Mawr says:

We stayed there with 2 children in the November half term. The kids had a great time around the lovely cottage, and it was an ideal place to explore all the key North Wales places. Lovely and quiet, we slept in till 10am every day, which for the kids was unheard of.

    Would definitely go back…

  11. Rose Tremoulet says:

What a piece of paradise!! The cottage is very tastefully decorated and not overdone…just perfect! So warm and cosy! Geraint, the owner, couldn’t have been more helpful. When we messaged him asking if he knew where we could buy more wood for the fire he rocked up on the doorstep in the middle of a storm with a whole load of wood, kindling and coal. On the last day when we started to pack the car we realised we had a flat tyre. Geraint offered to take the tyre all the way back to Bala and have it fixed. What a host!! Can’t rave about this place enough…and that’s without even mentioning how stunning the scenery is in this area.

  12. Rachel Furse, Banbury says:

We loved this cottage! Cosy, warm, with fantastic views and pretty garden. It is furnished to very high standard and is very comfortable. Geraint, the owner, couldn’t be more helpful. It is in a great position for getting about the area. We had a blissful getting-away-from-it-all week!
