Self Catering Stone Farmhouse near Bala, North Wales | Ty-Mawr

Ty-Mawr is an impressive detached self catering stone farmhouse in Llanuwchllyn just outside Bala in North Wales. This part of North Wales is very popular with adventure sport enthusiasts and hopefully you’ll find this cottage a perfect base from which to explore.

..welcoming log fire..
..uninterrupted views..
..roll top bath..

There’s a nice well equipped country style kitchen diner complete with a very attractive and locally crafted oak table. A modern oven and electric hob as well as a dishwasher, microwave, large double drainer sink etc are all included. The washer dryer is in the adjacent storage shed / extension. This storage shed is secure and there’s plenty of room in there for boots, bikes or even wind surfers.

Two leather sofas sit in a large comfortable lounge in this self catering stone farmhouse. The paintings that adorn the walls are by a locally renowned artist and depict the beauty of this rural area. The log fire is naturally very welcome after a day of walking in the hills or sailing across lake Bala. A  flat screen TV should help entertain when the weather might be against you.

A nice feature of this property is the second lounge or study next door. If you’ve lost the battle for the remote control you might like to retire gracefully to this area and read a book in front of a second warming log fire.

Only two bedrooms upstairs which may seem strange for such a large property. One twin bedroom and one double bedroom. There is a sofa bed in that study if you wanted to invite some extra guests however.

Both the bedrooms enjoy fantastic views over the rolling hills and mountains of this rich and fertile part of North Wales. The curtains, linen and ornaments are all tastefully chosen and complement the cottage nicely.

I’ve left the best room till last. The bathroom is fantastic. It’s huge and dominated by a large freestanding roll top bath which looks out on that lovely view we talked about. There are of course no neighbours to worry about in this secluded self catering stone farmhouse. There’s also a separate large shower cubicle and a nice white bathroom suite.

Location

The village of Llanuchllyn on the southern tip of Llyn Tegid (Bala Lake) is just over a mile away. The steam train that runs along the edge of the lake sets off from here. The village is also home the famous Eagle Pub. There’s a short cut across the fields back to the cottage, but don’t forget to bring a torch.

Bala itself is a 5 minute drive away and is a charming example of a welsh market town. A wonderful mix of traditional welsh culture and contemporary shops and cafés. The surrounding area has long established itself as a Mecca for adventure activities. Sailing, kayaking and windsurfing can be enjoyed on Bala lake with the help of Bala Water-sports and the world renowned Tryweryn white water centre is just on the outskirts of the village.

Sitting as it does on the Eastern edge of the National Park, this part of Snowdonia has the natural benefit of being easily accessible from the English road network. But seaside towns such as Aberdyfi and Barmouth are only an hour drive to the west. Similarly Snowdon is a little less than an hour to the North.

Lovely cottage , and most importantly it’s nice and warm. You can walk up the Aran mountains from the front door and the Arenig and Berwyn ranges are within easy reach. Good beaches a short drive away.
My only comment was that the lighting could have been a bit better , the energy saving bulbs don’t kick out much light at times.

We had a fantastic time at Ty-Mawr,really quiet and relaxing,it was great for our dog cause the grounds to the property are massive and enclosed,we can not fault it and hope to visit here again, many thanks to the owner geraint.

  4. Jason and Lisa, Blackpool says:

Great cottage in lovely location. Big garden that is dog friendly (and dog fun playing chase and football) and fully fenced in. The cottage has what you need, including the two wood burners in case the weather is a bit colder than our visit. There are lots of walks in the area, our favourite being the Precipice walk near Dolgellau, around a 15 minute drive away, which is an (almost) flat two hour walk with great views.
The cottage is an easy 40 minute stroll to the Eagle pub, down a back lane with no cars. The food there is good and the drinks are well priced. There is everything you need, including a big co-op, takeaways and more pubs in Bala which is around a 10 minute drive away.
We would recommend this cottage for a place that is near to everything you need, but is so peaceful that it seems like you are miles away from the rest of the world !

  5. Paul & Judy (Warwickshire) says:

Having stayed at Tal-y-bont last year, we decided to give Ty-Mawr a try this year and we weren’t disappointed. The views from this beautiful cottage are amazing. Weather was mixed but didn’t stop us doing some beautiful walks, our favourite being by Cregennan Lakes which was spectacular. Geraint was very helpful as before and would like to thank him for the wine too. So much more to see and do and would love to come back.

  6. Ute and Andreas, Osnabruck, Germany says:

We spent two wonderful, enjoyable and relaxing weeks in this cottage in May. Ty-Mawr is a very comfortable and tasteful furnitured and decorated cottage with much ambiance and a great view. The weather was unexpected and unusually warm and we enjoyed sitting in the nice garden. The location is great. There is so much to discover. Many sights, historic railways, the Snowdon area, Bodnants Garden, lovely towns and lakes/reservoirs and the coast are within easy reach The owner is very friendly and helpful. The booking with Dioni was uncomplicated and the cottage actually provides what the description and the photos/video have promised.

  7. Jane and David says:

Lovely cottage, good size, great location to explore the whole of
Snowdonia. Fantastic walks enjoyed by all including our dog, from Aberdovey to Conwy, including Snowdon, more walks to do so will hopefully be back soon

We had a fantastic few days in this lovely cottage. There is plenty of room and it is very comfortable and warm. The bathroom is particularly lovely. Lots to do in the area and the scenery is breathtaking. The Precipice walk is definitely worth doing as is the walk up Snowden. Take the miners track and wrap up warm.

Geraint and Dioni could not have need more helpful, thank you.

  9. steve and ed says:

Spent a really nice weekend at the cottage. The owner popped round and was most helpful , despite being in the middle of “lambing”.
Tranquil summed it up for us.
Big secure storage area , you could not bring enough to fill it.
    We will be back.

We had the most amazing time at this lovely cottage. The weather was not the best, but the cottage was so cosy with log burner going watching the wind and rain. The cottage is very well equipped with everything you need, wood provided. All the rooms are very big and clean and tidy. The front room and bathroom were our favourite rooms.

Bala lake was very high due to the recent floods was a sight to see. We would defiantly would book this amazing cottage again and would highly recommend ro everyone. The cows in the next field were our new friends loved watching them. Thanks ro Geriant for popping in to see if we were OK, a very nice touch.

    Magical mysterious marvellous!!!!
The cottage beautifully decorated and the host was lovely. The views to die for and breathtaking, and places of interest only a drive away, would recommend without hesitation, thankyou for letting your lovely home to us GEraint.

  12. Frances Melville-Brown says:

We had a lovely stay at Ty Mawr. The cottage is cosy and comfy and we had everything we needed. It is in a great location for some fabulous walks and we also went white water rafting with the National White Water Centre in Bala. This was a brilliant and thrilling experience and well worth the money.
Geraint, the owner, was a very pleasant and helpful chap and delivered some extra firewood for us.
The local pub in the village does an excellent steak and ale pie and local beer which was very welcome at the end of a long day tramping in the hills.
There was a bottle of wine on arrival but, just one small criticism, the advertising does make mention of a “welcome hamper” which, apart from the wine, was not the case. I think a pint of milk and some tea bags would be very welcome.
I work for a holiday cottage company in the south of England and know how difficult it is to suit all tastes and to get it right but I compliment Dioni on a good service, great quality cottage (we also went to see Tal y Bont across the road – very nice), lovely informal but catchy video, and I would certainly recommend and use again.
    Thank you.
