Self Catering Stone Farmhouse near Bala, North Wales | Ty-Mawr

Ty-Mawr is an impressive detached self catering stone farmhouse in Llanuwchllyn just outside Bala in North Wales. This part of North Wales is very popular with adventure sport enthusiasts and hopefully you’ll find this cottage a perfect base from which to explore.

..welcoming log fire..
..uninterrupted views..
..roll top bath..

There’s a nice well equipped country style kitchen diner complete with a very attractive and locally crafted oak table. A modern oven and electric hob as well as a dishwasher, microwave, large double drainer sink etc are all included. The washer dryer is in the adjacent storage shed / extension. This storage shed is secure and there’s plenty of room in there for boots, bikes or even wind surfers.

Two leather sofas sit in a large comfortable lounge in this self catering stone farmhouse. The paintings that adorn the walls are by a locally renowned artist and depict the beauty of this rural area. The log fire is naturally very welcome after a day of walking in the hills or sailing across lake Bala. A  flat screen TV should help entertain when the weather might be against you.

A nice feature of this property is the second lounge or study next door. If you’ve lost the battle for the remote control you might like to retire gracefully to this area and read a book in front of a second warming log fire.

Only two bedrooms upstairs which may seem strange for such a large property. One twin bedroom and one double bedroom. There is a sofa bed in that study if you wanted to invite some extra guests however.

Both the bedrooms enjoy fantastic views over the rolling hills and mountains of this rich and fertile part of North Wales. The curtains, linen and ornaments are all tastefully chosen and complement the cottage nicely.

I’ve left the best room till last. The bathroom is fantastic. It’s huge and dominated by a large freestanding roll top bath which looks out on that lovely view we talked about. There are of course no neighbours to worry about in this secluded self catering stone farmhouse. There’s also a separate large shower cubicle and a nice white bathroom suite.

Location

The village of Llanuchllyn on the southern tip of Llyn Tegid (Bala Lake) is just over a mile away. The steam train that runs along the edge of the lake sets off from here. The village is also home the famous Eagle Pub. There’s a short cut across the fields back to the cottage, but don’t forget to bring a torch.

Bala itself is a 5 minute drive away and is a charming example of a welsh market town. A wonderful mix of traditional welsh culture and contemporary shops and cafés. The surrounding area has long established itself as a Mecca for adventure activities. Sailing, kayaking and windsurfing can be enjoyed on Bala lake with the help of Bala Water-sports and the world renowned Tryweryn white water centre is just on the outskirts of the village.

Sitting as it does on the Eastern edge of the National Park, this part of Snowdonia has the natural benefit of being easily accessible from the English road network. But seaside towns such as Aberdyfi and Barmouth are only an hour drive to the west. Similarly Snowdon is a little less than an hour to the North.

Just managed to get a lovely week away in Wales before the lockdown hit. Ty Mawr is in a great location. Detached and with no immediate neighbours so as to feel completely isolated but within easy driving distance of any amenities that you may need. The cottage was wonderful and cosy and we felt at home straight away. As there was just myself, my boyfriend and two small dogs there was plenty of space. The bathroom is stunning and the kitchen has everything you need, including a dishwasher. The only down side was that the central heating was so efficient we did not have any need to light the beautiful fires!

  2. Neil coles says:

Great house , everything you need is there , the fire was lovely each evening, the views are amazing , the town of Bala has everything you need from shops, cafes , pubs and restaurants all in all a relaxing break from the madness that we are living through at the moment, one criticism would be it needs a coat rack or hooks ( maybe in the porch area ) as no where to hang coats .

We had a lovely stay at Ty Mawr near Bala. Managed to get out every day, even though we had the eye of the storm literally over us on one day last week. Cottage well equipped. So quiet and secluded, recommend it if you want to get away from the rat run or Covid.

  5. Karen Taylor says:

Lovely comfortable with lots of character, we we’re unlucky with the weather, rained all week! but good to get back to a nice warm & cosy cottage.

  6. Mandy Ely says:

We stayed for one week, we found the cottage to be very homely and comfortable. Very clean and looked after. The washer and dryer were a great addition to the cottage. The cottage has a large bath, which we enjoyed after a long day. There is a wrap around garden to relax in too, it only rained once for us, so we managed to make use of this space. The lake at Bala is only a 5-10 minute drive and offers a wide variety of water sports. It was an hour to the “mountain ‘ and to the zip line in Snowdonia. The views are stunning when travelling around. We would recommend this cottage.

  7. John Hook says:

One of the nicest holiday cottages we have ever stayed in. Me, my partner and our Jack Russell spent a fantastic week at Ty Mawr to celebrate our joint birthdays.

The cottage is really well fitted with every comfort you need but without losing the feel of an old and very cosy cottage. The central heating is very efficient (to the point we turned it off most days!) which is rare for a holiday cottage, usually they are a bit cold, not the case at all here. The wood-burner in the evenings was perfect and added to the cosiness. The cottage is very homely and we felt at home in no time at all, and the reclining leather sofas in the main lounge are a really nice touch. It has a kitchen that is sufficiently equipped for cooking a full English in the morning and preparing an evening meal too. And the all-important dish-washer to chuck everything in afterwards is a must (who wants to do washing-up on holiday??).

Upstairs is just as good, the beds have good mattresses with decent support and the rooms are cosy and warm. The bathroom is huge with a fab roll-top bath and a good sized shower enclosure.

The views from the cottage are breath-taking!! I spent some very happy moments sitting on the window seats with a glass of red just taking in the views and watching the spring lambs on the hills opposite. The garden is also lovely with lots of Spring flowers and great for the dog to run around in safely. We even ate breakfast in the garden one morning in the warm sunshine, what a treat for Wales in May!!

There is a large chest of drawers in the lounge that’s full of leaflets with various attractions and things to do, which is really handy for planning your week.

The cottage is also really well situated and we travelled to so many places within an hour’s drive maximum, so much to see and do and with the cottage so easily accessible we were able to go out for the morning, pop back for a cuppa and some lunch and then go out again in the afternoon for a few hours. Then back out in the evening or just rustle up some dinner and stay in by the fire – perfect!

All in all we had a fantastic holiday and would not hesitate to recommend this cottage. We both hope to return one day!

  8. Sam Brown says:

This cottage was perfect for us and our dogs. It is a great size with a lovely garden and the sheep in the field next door were lovely to watch! Geraint was ever so nice and helpful. The cottage is perfectly placed for getting around and there are some wonderful dog friendly pubs in Bala. All in all, we had a very relaxing break with amazing views and a cottage I could have moved into very easily. We will definitely return!

  9. C Chambers says:

Stayed for four nights last few days in Sept into Oct. House had everything we needed. Comfy bed, great recliner sofas, fab bath – with a view. Lovely and warm, logs delivered to the back door by Geraint who came to say hello as we arrived, welcome wine appreciated ! Great location, views of the surrounding hills, peaceful and private yet only 10 mins into Bala for essentials. Thank you
