Spectacular Views Over The Mawddach Estuary | Coed-Y-Moel

Coed-Y-Moel is situated in the hills above Barmouth, enjoying the most spectacular views over the Mawddach Estuary. Formerly the home of a sea captain sailing from Barmouth, this 3 bedroom stone cottage looks out over the estuary and Cader Idris beyond. The cottage itself is a traditional build of stonewalls under a welsh slate roof. I was sold on the place before I stepped over the threshold. But I can happily report that the cottage is perfect on the inside too.

As you step in, a lovely log burner has been placed in the large original inglenook fireplace to the left. This, combined with some comfortable seating and rustic oak beams creates a lovely cosy sitting area. A modern fitted kitchen has been installed to the right. Practical functionality, integrated dishwasher, modern cooker etc., plus nice touches like a granite worktop and a Belfast sink. The small dinning area is adjacent.

A door leading off the kitchen takes you to a split level bedroom area. Upstairs a large double bedroom has the best views in the house perhaps. Downstairs there’s a smaller twin room. All the beds are as you’d expect of a 5 star cottage and covered with crisp clean linen. The bathroom next to this twin room has a modern white suite with bath and shower attachment.

Back into the kitchen to climb up the bespoke spiral staircase to the last and largest of the three bedrooms. The original oak roof frame gives this en-suite double bedroom a special sense of character and style. The en-suite bathroom has a modern powerful shower as well as a luxurious roll top bath.

Location

Many visitors to this area will have already ventured up out of Barmouth to explore the well-known Panorama walk. Famous for it’s vista across this seaside location. Few if any will have climbed further up this single track road however. The views up here are even better of course. I suspect the pleasure of the observer is enhanced by the knowledge that only a handful of people are privy to this secret spot.

Barmouth itself has been a popular seaside holiday destination since Victorian times when the new Cambrian coast railway opened up this secluded part of North Wales to the cities and towns of England. The conversion of Coed-Y-Moel into a well-appointed self-catering holiday cottage is evidence of a new trend towards more luxurious accommodation and a renewed enthusiasm for the region.

And it’s difficult not to get excited about the area. Adventure sports are becoming increasingly popular. Everything from kite surfing and sea kayaking to rock climbing and mountain biking. More unhurried activities such as fishing, golf and walking are also enjoyed by many. Our more cultured guests will enjoy the huge array of historical attractions. Narrow gauge steam railways and slate quarries lay testament to our industrial heritage while impressive castles like Harlech and Caernarfon remind us of a time when Celtic – Anglo relations weren't quite as amicable as they are now perhaps.

We thoroughly enjoyed our weekend stay in Coed y Moel. Glorious views of late sun on snow-clad Cader Idris on our arrival and a starry night were soon replaced by cloud and mists… but the property was a very cosy, easy place to hunker down – glad we brought the smart speaker! Facilities are all there for cooking. Bryn the farmer/owner visited and replenished the logs and Sarah provided a welcome pack – both more than happy to help with anything.

A warm friendly atmosphere all round… and great to be out in the middle of big open hillside surrounded by spectacular views. Thanks for a great stay – hope to return.

We had a wonderful two weeks in this lovely cottage. We arrived just in time for the heatwave which was amazing. The stone building kept us cool inside and there was a fan which we used a couple of times. It was incredible to be able to enjoy the sea and beaches when it was so hot. The views are outstanding and the Coed Y Moel is beautifully decorated and furnished and well equipped. We were glad we had taken a sharp kitchen knife and one larger saucepan would have been handy. Otherwise it was a great kitchen to cook in. The bedrooms and bathrooms are generously sized and very attractive. The separate utility room was a bonus and meant we could keep sand and mud out of the cottage. Coed y Moel is now top of the list of our favourite cottages.

We were stunned by the location of this cottage and felt very privileged to be able to stay here so thank you to the owners for making it available! The views are outstanding and the only noise we heard were the cheeky lambs and a cuckoo. It is so peaceful and relaxing and we enjoyed just soaking up the atmosphere. The cottage was immaculate and has everything you need including fast WiFi which came as a surprise as other reviews indicated that there was none. Barmouth is a delightful town and we enjoyed walking up over the Old Rocks and were rewarded with another stunning view. The whole area charmed us. This was our first stay in Wales and won’t be our last now that we have discovered how beautiful and friendly it is. We hope to return to Coed-Y-Moel one day soon!

Quiet piece of paradise which we used as a base to explore Snowdonia in Dec / Jan. Close to many great walks, warm and cosy, modern appliances, great fireplace, idyllic stone cottage with great views, clean, great communications from the owners and Dioni and the lack of wifi in the house itself meant we could really unplug from the world (although you can get signal on the driveway if needed). Everything we could hope for and more!

Fantastic property we loved the seclusion yet only minutes from the centre of Barmouth, the cottage was so welcoming with everything we needed for a cosy stay in November.
We could have spent all our time just watching the ever changing scenery around us.
We found the cottage with no problem (in the dark) and hope to return.

A fabulous break in a lovely cottage. The property has been maintained to an exceptionally high standard. The location high above the estuary is stunning. Definitely recommend staying here.

The views from Coed y Moel across the Mawddach estuary and to Cadair Idris are absolutely stunning. There are some beautiful and varied walks in the area too. The house is really well designed and appointed and we had a very cosy, comfortable and enjoyable week there.
